timing belt broke!!

i have a 92 lebaron 3.0 v6 and the timing belt broke while i was driving. It just stalled so i took the the distrbutor cap off and cranked it to see if it was turning and it wasnt, so that is what told me it was the timing belt that broke. I NEED SOME HELP PLEASE. are there timing marks im not to sure how to do this. COULD THAT HAVE MESSED ANY THING ELSE UP??? Thanks, Jason

I hope and pray that you didn't bend any valve b/c the 3.0 V6 is an interference engine. The exact same happened to me when I had my old Dodge Spirit w/ the same 3.0 V6. I was fortunate that I didn't bend any valves when it happened. If you want to tackle on this project by yourself, go to your local auto part store and pick up a manual about your car (if you can't find one on Lebaron's find any manual about Chrysler vehicles equipped w/ the 3.0 V6, it will all be the same procedure). While you have everything apart, replace your water pump, cam oil seals and crank oil seals and timing belt tensioner. Mine broke due to old age, coolant leak, & a bad tensioner that ate up the backside of the belt. From hence forth, make sure that at every 60,000 miles, you replace your timing belt.

thanks for the info. its not my car, i was going to try and fix it for a freind. He said he tryed to start it more than once after it broke. I dont know if that would make it worse or not,what do you think? He also said that he was driving doing about 35 mph. when it broke. Thanks, Jason

if he tried to start it up even after the belt broke, could cause even more damage. If he was doing 35 when it broke, it's 50/50. The only way to know if he bent any valves is to get the belt back on and do a compression test. Compression on this engine should be about 150 psi.

I have a chance to buy a '93 convertible with a 2.5 in pretty good shape for cheap. It needs a waterpump. From what I read it's best to do the timing belt and cam and crank seals while you're at it. Since I don't have a garage and winter is setting in I would have it done instead of doing it myself. Does anybody have an idea of how many hours this takes or a guesstimate of what it would cost to have done? I'm thinking of local repair guy, not dealership rates.

Nope, the 3.0l is NOT AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE, if it was then you would crack your valves whenever the belt broke. You don't need to replace it every 60k, every 3.0 that i've had I replaced them at 100k intervals and I have never broke a belt.

It sounds like you mikght have an answer to my problem. I've got a 94 gtc with the 3L sohc v6 and I need to know if the timing makes are on the block. It keeps overheating and I've narrowed the problem down this far. I'm a little strapped for cash and I need the timing set asap.

I can't remember if the timing marks are on the block. They'd be on the heads for the cams and on the block for the crankshaft. Why does everyone have such a hard time finding timing marks?? There wasn't even a question of "where are they" from me when I changed the belt on my 3.0L, or on any of the other 3.0L's or any other engines I've changed the timing belts on... are we talking about different timing marks????

if its overheating then i highly doubt its the timing. buy yes there are marks on the block for the crank, the ones for the cams are on the cover. What have you done to it sofar for the overeating problem and i may be able to point you in the right direction
