Sub Direction: Sealed Fired Back, right?

just wanna ask, cuz as far as i know, sealed enclosures are best fired toward the back. is that wrong? whats the advantage/disadvantage of firing towards the front (toward driver from trunk). (i've got a 93 civic sedan)

It all depends on the car. My Escort sounds best with everything facing front. Vented, sealed, Bandpass, it doesn't matter. Try different things out, figure out what sounds best, then mount it down.

As a general rule, back will allow deeper bass to be produced before it gets to your ear. The rear facing sub will fire off the back of the car, then travel forward. With the long wavelength of bass frequencies, the more distance you have, the more chance for low frequencies to develop. The box itself will resonate at other frequencies and the direct approach will provide the tuning for higher frequencies, so facing backward typically makes a smoother transition between mid and low.

But like JetLee said, its all dependent on your ear and your car.

personally, i would never recommend front firing subs from a trunk unless your gonna pull the back seat out or you can fold it all the way down. just doesn't sound good to me. like curtis said, rear firing allows for deeper bass due to the few extra feet the soundwaves have to expand. which is probably the reason it sounds better. longer soundwaves travel through solid materials easier than short. which is why you can hear someones subs from down the road long before the mids and highs.

my back seats do fold down, but its a tiny ass civic, so i'll try it forward for a while, but i'm guessing from whats said is that its better just to stick with firing it back. thanks. :smokin:

id would do it firing back, it give the sound waves more space blah blah blah, plus you can see the actually sub when you pop your trunk, not just the back of a box

I pop the trunk to show my amp.

My box is too big to fire back anways, there isn't enough space around the sides for the sound to go back to the cabin. I've also got a rear horn loaded box, so it develops tons of bass within itself.

Hmmm .... then I guess the bass on headphones must suck the big one
