Cleaned TB!

My god, I love it!

I cleaned my TB for the first time ever. I took off the sensors and took off the TB off the manifold. Bought some TB cleaner (STP). When I took it off, the whole backside of the flapper was thick and chunky with black gunk. The inside of flapper to the manifold was filthy too. Insane filth. I let it soak in the cleaner, and cleaned the sensors. Put it all back, adjusted the throttle cable tension, and god damn!

I can't believe the difference! Repsonse is quicker. Idle is smoother. And when accerlating from a complete stop (normally), when droppng the clutch, there is no jerk. You can't feel when the clutch is fully dropped. IDK why that made a difference, but it's awesome.

I suggest for everyone that hasn't cleaned the TB, take it all apart and do it. I also cleaned a little inside the manifold, and took pipe cleaners to the PCV and EGR pipes. I suggest that too! Great difference. Next, getting the TB ported.

Nice work. This is one of those maitnenance things everyone over 60-100k miles should be doing, but no one does it.

hard to do? nope it's easy as pie. specially in the 420a. all you have to do is remove the 2 bolts, gas pedal wire thingy, and the harnesses. unlike the 4g63. we have 4 bolts, coolant lines, sensors. and for turbo we have to remove the cruise box in order to remove the TB.

Yeah, if anything, it's WAY too easy. Don't loose the gasket that goes between the TBU and the IM.

Anyone know a good link to an FAQ for how to clean the TB on my GSX? After reading this, I'm super pumped to pop the hood this weekend and clean it. I have a shop manual but it's in Florida.

YEA!!!! I just opened up the throttle body today and ALOT, ALOT of black crap was everywhere!! EVEN on the intake tube!!

How does it accumulate there and what is it? Is it oil, or gas? Will it harm the car! THANKS!

I will definitly do this tomorrow!!

There is a lot of crud build up in the manifold from the EGR system, and oil from the valve cover gets all over the intake pipes, IC, and TB.

Hey David B! How did you adjust/tighten the throttle cable tension?

I will do a write up about it... since you all want one. Give me time

I did an article before on how to tighten the cable... just got to find it.

Here we go

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=446393&highlight=throttle

There's a pic that shows where the tension bolts are. There is 2. The cable is connected to the plate those 2 bolts hold. You want to pull the cable back... not too tight. Then tighten the 2 bolts. For the best response, make sure when everything is attached, that the cable is pretty tight. No slack. This will give you great throttle response. It should be so tight, that when you put your finger on the cable by the tb, and barely press down, the TB plate should open. NO SLACK

Yeah that cruise control box is annoying. Like the vapor line right over the tops of the uicp bolts. :( Couldn't you also just take the throttle cable off and turn the plate to clean the backside?

I called my dad to have him scan and send me TB cleaning instructions and he told me to just take off the air filter and run a can of Gum Out (or Gunk Out) through the system. Is that safe for the MAF and turbo? Is it effective?

i tryed that tensioner to adjust the cable and it worked great i have much better throttle responce now,i know its sad that a thread about a simple tb cleaning and cable adjustment started all this craze about it but it shows you how untalented the rest of us are hahaha thanks for the tip man peace

Stock, there is a lot of slack. It also gets streched out over a period of time, so it's good to tighten it up about now.
