Overflowing gas tank

I recently started to experience a problem when fueling my 1998 Hyundai Tiburon. The car has about 65K miles. The last 3 times I have put gas, the pump acts like the tank is full and stops pumping after every 5 or 6 seconds. I have to stop, pull the pipe out of the tank, put it back in and start pumping again. Sometimes the gas even oveflows and spills out. This car always had a similar problem whenever I filled up the tank to the top where the gas would overflow and spill out right before the pump stopped pumping gas. That's why I never fill up the tank more than 3/4 full. However now this happens even when the tank is nearly empty. I thought the problem could be the gas pump but I tried a different gas station today and the same thing happened. Could it be because I'm always using the 87 octane gas? I've also heard that maybe the heat may have something to do but the weather these days around here in FL is not hot at all. Any ideas as to what the problem may be? Thanks!

i know the 99 miatas had a problem with this, we got an updated anti-siphoning valve in the filler neck to correct the concern... you may have a similar part update on your car. also try a different gas station... my gmc truck would do that but only at one station

Yeah, your getting a vapor lock in the filler neck. You have have a line that is clogged or has a defective valve like posted above.
