98 V6 EX alternator whine...

Changed the battery in my 98 V6 EX Accord a couple of weeks ago. Since then I have had a whine comming from the Alternator. Sounds like the whine you get when the alt is trying to charge a dead battery. The car starts ok every time but the Alternator is very HOT to the touch.. I measured the voltage at the battery when running and it is 11.95 volts ..too low. When the car is shut off the voltage goes up to 12.5 volts which seems normal. Think I have an Alternator or a battery problem?
Thanks

Why did you change the battery? What is the battery voltage when the car is not running? Should be at least 12.65 volts. Could have a shorted cell which would drop the voltage by 2.1 volts and increase the alternator load. The battery is the first place to start because changing it is the easiest. You can use any 12 volt battery to see if changing it solves the problem.

Unplug the regulator and see if it still whines (I'm guessing it will), then it's got a bad bearing that's cooking it.

You probably didn't need the battery, the alt was the problem.
