i beleive my tranny is going out but wanna be sure before i buy a tranny.the car has drive, and will move in drive, all other gears it will go into but they will not move, like its locked down or something.drive was the same way but i pulled a relay and now it will drive down the road in drive but no other gear.anyone have any ideas what would cause this and is it the tranny or something minor?if it is the tranny, does anyone in missouri have one for sale??thanks!

how many miles do you have on the transmission? When was the last time you had the fluid & filter changed out? The cheapest way to tell if it's a bad transmission or not is to changed out your fluid and use only Mopar ATF+4. To be on the safe side, I'd suggest having a complete flush and using only Mopar ATF+4. If in the long run, it is a bad transmission, though I strongly don't recommend it b/c it's too much of a hassle, you can swap out transmissions from any Chrysler LH vehicle from 1993-1997, Dodge Intrepid, Chrysler Concorder, Chrysler LHS. Those other cars have the same exact transmission that is in your car.

i am unsure how many miles are on the tranny.i bought the car to fix and drive,i have acess to a newer tranny so changing it isnt a problem but if the one in it is ffine then i wanna avoid that.the previous owner said he was driving and heard a loud clunk and the car stopped, but like i said i have pulled a relay and gotten it to go down the road in drive but no other gear, feels like it goes into gear though, but it wont move in any other gear so i am not 100% sure..

if it's in drive and not shifting it's in "limp mode" where it's limited to only 2nd gear and reverse. If it made a clunk before, that's the torque converter basically starting to come apart. A fluid & filter change may work, but eventually it'll get to the point where you'll start the car up and when you put it in gear, it'll stall out.

so the torque converter is the problem? i can put a new torque converter and change the filter and fluid and it will be fine???

change out the tranny, the torque converter is inside of the tranny, which means you'll have to pull out the transmission anyway.

I would cycle your ingnition key on/off 5 times (not to the point of starting it) and on the fifth one leave it on, then count your check engine light. If you have 2 counts of 5 then its not computer related and might be a sensor.
Best bet is to buy a Chilton's Manual for the car and it will show you how to check your own codes. I'd do this before forking out money for a new transaxle.

I would replace both the input and output speed sensors. They only cost about 15$ each. I replaced the input speed sensor and my car shifts fine. I heard a loud clunk too and it only had 1st and 2nd gear. There is so much computer crap in those tranny's i'd do that first before getting down to the nitty gritty.
