Should we use High Detergent, Thinner Oil?

In one thread (recent - earlier) the author said he read from some
Chevrolet "Update" (I can't find it...), that Metros have small lifter
oil holes and thus cannot use thicker oils.

We should stick to 5W-30 oil or the lifters stick and valves burn up.

Did I get that correct...?

My question is, should we then use High Detegent - thinner oil?

I WAS using 30 wt oil and my lifter(s) started recently sticking (tapping)
in the now wet and colder Spokane, WA weather.

I changed to 5W-30 yesterday with a cup of transmission fluid added
for detergent effect.

How about I add one quart of 20 weight oil to the 5W-30 oil to thin it
out? ANYONE WHO KNOWS ABOUT THIS SUBJECT ???

I am hoping my lifter(s) loosen up and I won't have to have a valve
job (head) done?

I can answer my own question - NOW!

The oil weight is CRITICAL to the hydaulic Lifters!

My case in point....

I have been running straight 30 weight oil all summer.
I figured the thicker oil would help the main bearings if they were worn
in my 150,000 mile engine in my '93 Metro 2DHB.

Worked fine... Hot engine - thin oil...!

THEN the weather got cold fast here in Spokane, WA and suddenly my
lifters were knocking and I lost lots of power.
I thought I was going to have to spend $500 on a head/valve job....

I read the post from "FIBERGLASSMAN" who said that (I quote),
"chevorlet come out with a update on the oil used in a geo 3 cly. only
use 5 wt oil because the lifters holes are to small for any heavier oil to
flow threw, sounds like a burnt valve , my car did that and it cost
around 500 bucks to have one replaced." I took that to heart.....

So this last Sunday I changed my oil to 5W-30 and added a ½ cup of
transmission fluid for detergent effect.

Today my Metro is purring like an electric fan motor!

IMPORTANT LESSON - stick with thinner oils if one has hydaulic lifters.

My Jeep Cherokee has a noisy lifter. I'll try thinner oil there too!

I will also buy the one quart "Oil Flush" stuff one adds to the oil, idle
the engine for 5 minutes and then drain the oil. Should help to
remove "sludge" and stuff that might plug the lifter journal (hole).
I've never used it before, but the idea "sounds good..."

Anybody have anything to say about this subject!

I want to thank "FIBERGLASSMAN" for his insight on this topic!
He saved my ass! THANK YOU Sooooo MUCH!
I never would have guessed that oil weight would have such an
effect!

Dr Bill,
Mobil oil already has a detergent in it. I use it all the time. 10W in the summer and 5W in the winter. Talkin' about the regular stuff not Mobil 1. Gunk makes the most awesome motor flush. It is pretty expensive. I have used it for about twenty years now and love the stuff. DO NOT get it in your eyes. DO NOT leave it in your engine any longer than 15 minutes. It will eat the bearings! Always read the directions...
Just my two cents! :evillol:
