can you tell from what area the chirp is coming from? front or rear of engine? if you remove the belt does the chirp go away?( dont drive it like this, just briefly run the engine without the belt to aid in diagnosis)more than likely its probably in need of a belt. but an accessory can also be causing it along with a pulley. if it doesnt go away with the belt off, id look to the rear of the engine, specifically at the cam synchronizer, they sound like a noisy belt when they start to go bad, except the noise comes from the rear of the engine.

First , thank you for replying , it sounds like its comming from the top rear part of the engine maybe from the synchronizer assemby area. But i'm not much of a mechanic , does this synchronizer assemby have a bearing that could be going out and if so how much would it cost to repair?

V6 12V Vulcan engine, driver's side, right? I have a 2001, did the same. I ignored it, it was somewhat intermittent, although at one point lasted for a couple of months. Currently I haven't had it for about 6 months or so. I believe it is related to the cam position sensor, some plastic part touching something else.

Engine: V6 3.0 Liter engine = Thank you yes my chirping is also intermittent, seems louder when i first starts up then slowly fades disappears them may or may not come back until the motor is shut off and restarted later on.

I have a 2000 vulcan ...I had the same problem (intermittent)....Since I wasnt getting a code on it I just let it go with the expectation that I would eventually have to replace the cam sensor......After a few weeks
it stopped chirping any more......So You probably souldnt worry about it unless you get a code or it gets very regular.....

It may be the serpentine belt. What I have done in the past to determine whether or not the belt is causing chirps/ squeaks is to start the car, open the hood, and lightly drip a SMALL amount of vinyl cleaner (armor all, 2001, etc) on the belt (watch your fingers) and see if the noise goes away.

For future reference the 2000 and up only comes with a 3.0L V6

Yes :smokin: my engine is a V6 3.0 Liter and thanks to all that answered my plea, yesterday the cam sensor synchronizer assemby started to get real loud, so i had it replaced today $115.83 for the part.
The old one when turned by hand was really squeaky and wobbly compared to the new one. Thanks to all that answered :smile: Lee

I have same problem with the chirping noise in my 2000 Taurus. It got worse and now it causes the engine to stall. It stops chirping after about 10 minutes of running. Did you fix it? Help me out.

The old one when turned by hand was really squeaky and wobbly compared to the new one. Some people who answered my posts let it go but didn't say later if they replaced theirs or not, i feel better now that i had mine replaced, car runs real smooth now. good luck, Lee

This must be a common problem, because I had the same problem with my '02 Taurus. It was the "cam position sensor" that was replaced to stop the chirping noise. The replacement was covered under warranty, so I paid nothing out of pocket on it. I was told by the tech at the dealer that if the sensor totally fails that it could cause internal damage to the engine. I suppose this sensor affects engine timing, which then affects ignition/fuel/air mixtures. If any of these aren't working properly, the computer should force the engine into "limp-mode", hopefully before any damage is done. I would not ignore the chirping noise.

Below the air intake hose on the drivers side. It is ynder a little wiring loom also. Not hard to replace. If syncronizer needs replaced, be sure to install it EXACTLY in the position the old one came out or you will trip a P0340 code.

A few years ago I bought the synchronizer from my dealer and paid about $155 for it. Labor rates around here in Maryland hover around $80 or so per hour. I did it myself but it still would take at least a half hour to replace the unit.

Did you have the cam position synchronizer assembly replaced or just the cam position sensor? The cam position synchronizer lists for about $125.
