camry 1987 steering shaft

have asked this early today, but maybee that could be misunderstand. The problem are when I pull inthe steering wheel I can pull the steering shaft up about 5 cm (i don´t think this is normall) so can anyone tell me what this problem could be. You see when I push the shaft back all seemed to function normally, but there must be something wrong.
