Considering buying a 96-98 7 series. Any thoughts on the I vs. IL (other than the 4+ inches in the rear legroom?). I also know about the 95 (96?) engine problems. Wondering if the wheelbase diff changes the ride. Thanks.

I have recently owned both the i and il in the 99 model (little difference over the 98) and found no significant difference in handling between them. I did not, however, try them in snow to see if there is any slip differential between them. The 6 inches of leg room makes the il much better for your passengers and if you have small kids it keeps them from kicking the back of your seat and messing up the leather.

If you are going to park in a garage, I would look closely at the length. I had trouble fitting my il in the garage while the i went in quite nicely.

In either case you are most definitely looking at a world class car that you will enjoy.

I too was looking at both and drove the IL, I and also the 540 to compare. Obviously the 5 is going to be pure sport but there was a difference between the 7s. The I look is slightly sportier and the handling is a bit tigher as it dives into the corners. The IL has a more refined look, I think a bit more elegant rather than sporty.

The IL however has an amazing ride, the power is there and the room in the back is great. I decided upon the flagship IL and think I made the right choice. (It's a 96 blk/blk) Good luck but you won't go wrong either way.
