GM SUCKS! Power Window no longer works

Power window on my 2000 silverado on the driver side doesn't work anymore. you actually hear the motor when you press the down button but the window stays in the up position. What happened and how much will it cost to fix it, or what should I look into to find out whats wrong?

"GM SUCKS!"?????? Go trade it in for a Dodge or Ford and deal with their problems?????

Airplanes fall out of the sky, boats sink and fishing lines break. Get a grip "newbie" and settle down!!!

Could be the motor drive gears broke since you can hear the motor run. You'll probably have to replace it.

Also check that the window is not jamming to cause stress on the motor and gears.

I park under an oak tree that has been dripping sap for about a month. It stuck my wife's window so bad that she couldn't roll her window up. Do you have sap on yours?

LongIslander26

It's probably just a bad regulator. They cost around 200 bucks and take about an hour or so to install.
And if "GM sucks" just because you have one window problem on a 5 year old truck, then your head would probably explode if you had to put up with the crap that goes wrong on a Ford or a Dodge. A simple window problem is a walk in the park compared to the shit that goes wrong on those trucks. I know, I worked at a Ford and Dodge dealership.

Didnīt Ford tell F-150 owners to park on the curb so their house house wouldnīt catch on fire because of the trucks suddenly catching on fire from a bad cruise control?

If you have power windows, they're bound to break sooner or later. It doesn't matter what you drive.

So it must be the regulator then? Is that what drives the window up and down? Anyone have hookups at any Chevy dealerships?

It's OK to be frustrated and to have an issue with your truck, We're not nieve and believe everything is perfect with our rides, but there are ways to find help and be frustrated and telling everyone their truck sucks isn't quite one of the better approaches. The way you opened your thread was like slapping someone in the face and then asking them to buy you a beer for it!!!!

Yes, Normally when you can hear the motor turning and the window is just sitting there not moving, 99% of the time it is the regulator.

ok guys over the weekend I inspected and found that the driver side power window cable was snapped!!! WTF? So..... Has anyone replaced this part before, it looks like I need a whole new regulator and cables as seems to be one part only. How long does it take to install such a part? thanks guys.

It's not as hard as it looks. Once you get those cables out of your way, (Cut them with wire cutters if you have to) and the window UP so you can work inside the door, it's just a few bolts, a couple of clips here and there, and an electrical connection or 2. Shouldn't take more than about 2 hours if you've never done one before, so yes, you'll need a whole new regulator. Once you get the new one out of the box, you'll see where and how it mounts to the door, and you'll know what bolts to take out. It's not real hard, just a PITA sometimes working in such a small space. Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

$180 from 1aauto.com including shipping and $240.63 not including sales tax from dealership. What would you guys suggest I go with, generic brand X or OEM quaility?

BlenderWizard
11-17-2005, 04:50 PM
In all likelyhood, Generic Brand X is OEM quality... Auto companies outsource MANY things, and the chances brand x is made by the same supplier as the OEM are pretty good.

My dad bought an aftermarket motor/regulator for his 99 silverado and it works perfectly. I worked at a chevy dealer parts dept. for 10 years and the regulators with cables all had problems breaking. I have sold 1000's of them, probably 10,000 or so. They were horrible in all gm vehicles that used cables which today is nearly all of them. I had a Grand Prix that went through 2 regulators in each door in just a year and a half. So for my 03 Silverado hasn't had any problem's. "crosses fingers"

For future referrence for everyone that is searching for a fix for this issue, BUY the regulator from 1aauto.com $150 bucks shipped part bolts in 10mins Just need a few basic tools and your done. Works perfect, fuck the dealership they wanted a loot of money for one damn simple task.

First, let me thank you for trying to be of help as oppossed to some of the other replies. I have a 96 Taho, excellent shape, but the drivers side power window has become seriously faulty. All other widows, switches, etc. work fine.
Only the drivers' side may/may not open/close. How do you suggest I try to isolate between motor, switch, cable? I would like to have a plan instead of blindly tearing the door apart. As I live in the Northern states, this is more than just an inconvenience.
Thanks.
