I need to change the drive shafts on both sides. Are there any special tips for doing this? I have done it before on other cars. Just wondering if there are any clips or such that i should be aware of before i try pulling them off thanks.

No they slide out of the transaxle with NO clips inside. Just have to get the outboard joint out of the spindle and hub first.

When I did my 92 Caravan I was told by the parts man NOT to pull them both out at the same time as this would allow a gear to drop in the transmission and would be almost impossible to put back together without dismanteling the tranny.

Dear Waltham
Very interesting, I wouldn't take anymore advice from this parts man anymore. :) I have had many axles out chryslers and also rebiult many
auto's and manual trans. and nothing is going to drop out of position inside the trany. Maybe another manufacturers trans but not chrysler.
thanks

Better safe than sorry I always say, this is my first Dodge (and first front wheel drive) , neither my Chiltons or Haynes manual said much concerning that fact one way or the other and it was not a big deal to do them one at a time so I did it the way he suggested.
Thanks for the information :)

The hardest part is getting the drivers side axle to "pop" out of the trans. They have an internal clip that helps them stay in, and you have to get a pry bar in there to get them to pop out. The drivers side is sorta hard to get to. Other than that, they are just like the older years.
Good luck, Gary.

If yours is anything like mine, the hardest part was getting the old seal out of the drivers side. it is recessed and was a pain to get to with my style seal puller. Or that dude was just plain stuck in there, one or the other ;)
I am glad to go through the trouble of changing the seals though, it stopped 2 leaks by doing so. Now my tranny fluid level hardly ever needs topping off.

True Its always better to be safe than sorry! And I know you dont know me from the man on the moon but the next time you can take both out at the same time. Also, If this was the case the Chrysler service manuals would warn against it. Chilton manuals might miss it but not Chrysler manuals.
take care

Yes you can take them both out at the same time. You have to in order to replace / rebuild the trans., and I've never had a problem getting them back in.
