Box Stuffing / Poli-Fil

Before I build my box, which would be MASSIVE for a tinyass honda civic, (4 cu.ft.), I'd like to consider having atleast some trunk space. I hear that you could use poli fil, about 1 pound per 1 cu.ft. of space you got, but how much space does that make the subs "see"? or is it that using 1 lb of polyfil will make the speaker "see" 1 cu.ft. of space? Also, is it as good as just making the damn box to its actual size rather than downsizing it and putting in stuffing? thnx.:smokin:

I believe you're supposed to use 1 pound per cu. ft. and that makes it see a little more space... but I don't think it makes it "see" the 1 cu. ft... I understand what you're saying though.

When I looked on the internet, I couldn't find a lot of info on using the stuff. It can't be nearly as good as actually having the correct size box.

the reason i wanted to know, though, was if it would allow me to sownsoze my box for trunkspace, but i'm just gonna make it 4 cu.ft. which is basically all my trunk. i might get some polyfil, maybe not, but for the resonance advantage (i hear it can transfer some off of the box.) which is prob why you hear it hitting louder.

As far as I know, you shouldn't purposely make your box smaller and then use polyfill, you'd be much better using the correct box specs. Polyfill is only if you're off by a few cubic ft. or something small like that. I'd double check with someone else though.

My speaker are in the right box.I just used a bag of poly to see what it would do.

This may help, from another forum......I have a nice loose fill for my Wo's of very torn apart polystuff. A loose torn fill about 3/4 of the way up the sealed side with one inch poly stapled around the sides. I played around with the amount for a whole evening untill I found the right amount. It is a compromise of volume and damping....the rule of thumb is about a 25 % increase in box volume for a full poly stuffed box. The sealed side is about .7 cubic feet so a half stuff will give me about a 12 % increase in apparent box volume. I have been reading some old school sound engineering books and have been studying up on the speed of sound. If you have many faceted surfaces for sound to reflect off it takes a longer path. Each time sound is reflected it is slowed down. This effect to the woofer gives a longer path for the sound to follow and inversly makes the woofer see a larger cavity. This works to a point, where the sound is blocked by the volume of your polystuff if it is too tightly packed and actually removes box volume.... Remember...a nice loose to medium stuff is more ideal for accoustically tricking your woofer into seeing more box volume....
