Ignition Switch

I removed the ignition switch that is mounted on the steering column under the dash to replace it. I couldn't see exactly what i was doing nor did I really know what I was doing accept yhat I was able to get it out. Now I cannot seam to find the right hole in the slider switch nor does the actuator rod seem to be in the right location if I follow the instructions. I'm lost can anyone help?
