97 avenger v6

I have a 97 avenger v6 with 100,000 miles on it. Car runs great but with on little/big problem. Has an auto tranny, as I drive it shifts up to 2nd then seems to got back to neutral on its own--do you guys think the tranny is gone? If it is shot do you have any ideas on prices? Thanks for the help. JD
