harmonic balancer removal

Hello Everyone,
I'm trying to get to my crankshaft position sensor on my 1992 88 royale.
After LOTS of effort, I removed the bolt securing it in place. I thought I had it made until I tried removing the balancer. It doesn't budge. It doesn't appear to require a pulley puller for removal but tell me am I wrong?

A puller will make your life much easier as it is usually pressed on and the puller is needed to take the balancer off.

Thanks for the quick response. I read somewhere that it should come off easily and mine is by no way, shape, or form doing that.
Will a "standard" puller work or do I need something specifically made for this.

In regards to your balencer, all you have to do is look for threaded holes spaced either 180 degrees out or 120 degrees around the center bolt hole. If there are threaded holes, rent or buy a harmonic balancer puller. If there are none. Then it should slide right off. If is does not slide, get a can of P'Blaster from the parts store. White can, yellow top found near the WD-40. The PB Blaster, as its commonly refered, should be sprayed inside the area where you removed the crankshaft bolt, especially where the woodruff key is. Let it sit for about 30 minutes. Then by taking a hammer, or even that 36 mm socket you probably used to take out the bolt, tap the harmonic balencer as you try and wiggle it off. I should say that your not hitting the area where the belt goes, you should be hitting the area around the bolt hole. Give it a good rap, tap, tap and the vibration should help the PB work in more and break loose the rust that is probably keeping you from removing the pulley. Hopefully this helps you. If all else fails you may have to find a jaw type puller to help you get it off. -Chris

its a pain i broke an sk pry-bar trying to get the 15/16 bolt off my neighbor tried his air gun with 250 pounds of torque and nothing, i am going to my brothin laws shop sat to try his 650 pound torque air gun that had better work, what a plac to put a freaking sensor.

its a pain i broke an sk pry-bar trying to get the 15/16 bolt off my neighbor tried his air gun with 250 pounds of torque and nothing, i am going to my brothin laws shop sat to try his 650 pound torque air gun that had better work, what a plac to put a freaking sensor.

i just got back from my brother-in laws shop, the 650 lb. air gun did not budge the freaking 15/16 th bolt one bit, so wh heated up the nut, i do-not recomend this because we melted the rubber in -side the harmonic balancer and now it wobbles making an awlful noise, so now i need a new harmonic balancer along with the crank position sensor, i dropped the car off at the nearest olds dealer and said good luck, i give up , at 98 bucks per hour labor, i thinks its worth it after all the misery i went through, they probally have a four foot pry-bar to get that freaking nut off. good luck dudes,god knows how many hours of labor they will get me for........

:banghead: they got me for 218 dollars labor for the crank sensor and pcv valve, i purchased a new harmonic balance pulley because i torched the old one trying to heat the bolt on it

Last one I did- I put the breaker bar against the frame rail and cranked the starter- worked great- I was unable to break it loose any other way- don't recommend it without using proper precautions though.....

I hooked vice grips on flywheel starter gear and took a 4ft peice of pipe and socke and rachet to get my 90 olds ,then balancer just slide easy-off
