Code questions

Over the last week or so my ABS light in my 95 GTP has been coming on periodically. So I thought I would go and buy myself a simple code reader, once I got it out to the car and started flippng through the manual, I discovered that my car isn't on the list, so I returned it.
The ABS light has since shut off, if I take it to a shop to get it read, will the code be saved? or does the light have to be on for the code to be read.
The car is completely stock (mechanically...I've only added a CD player and a couple aesthetic items), I've only had the car for a bit over a month now so I haven't even had the tires off it let-a-lone played with any bearings or sensors.

Also, under hard acceleration I'm noticing a considerable ammount of "whine" coming from the transmission, is this normal? Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but if something goes wrong with the drive train I want it to happen in the next 3000km while the warrenty is still good. I'm not used to a sound like this cause I've been driving a full size van for the last 5 years, and I was never able to accelerate hard in that, lol. I noticed something in another post where someone said a similar sound could be coming from the torque converter. If something is in fact wrong with the transmission, might a code reader be able to pick this up? and again would the code be saved?

Last time I delt with reading codes was in 12th grade auto shop...and that was a good 4 or 5 years ago.

finally, can anyone recommend an affordable code reader for my car?

Thanx
Jamie

Wal Mart now has code readers for under a $100.

Will not read abs codes, this requires a full line scanner with abs capabilities. Most abs codes will not stay in memory. Not all trans codes will show up in a reader only ,needs a full scan, does this whine in neutral or park at say 2500 rpms?

When I was at Advance Autoparts last night I bought a coder reader that had a setting specifically for ABS codes. But it was the one that my car wasn't on the list for. I'm taking it in for an oil change tomorrow afternoon, so I will just see if they can read it at the shop.

As for the whine I'm hearing, I can hear it when I rev the car up to 3000rpm in neutral, its just not as noticable, in park at 2500rpm its even less noticable. This tells me that it only happens when I'm in gear so then something must be wrong there, am I wrong?

Thanx again

Jamie

I've had 2 fwd GM cars with both the 4t60and 65e transmissions that both do this and have heard it on other GM fwd cars, anyway some research indicates it is usually caused by a drive chain sprocket bearing. I never did anything about this 150k on both cars. To make sure remove the serp. belt and try it. I thought you were talking about the free AZ scan they do, referring to the abs. What you really need to diagnose the abs is to be able to read individual wheel speed sensor outputs.
