dash lights

can anybody help me my 1998 passat estste tdi has developed a problem.dashlights/radio lights ,all lights on dash,electric window lights are out,lights started flashing then went out head lights working ok. courtesy lights working ok.every thing inside dead.

I have the same problem... 2001.5 glx. Tech told me that they would try a new light switch. Just pulled it out and am starting to test it . My dad also said that it might be the relay that controls the lights. so just starting to trouble solve... good tip . to remove the switch you have to push in the lever on the swich when it's in the off position, then turn clockwise.... it will click and lock the retaining clips and the swich will pop right out. see what you can do and kep me posted too. also planing to go buy a service manual so i can get the wiring diagram. probably get this for free but my dealer is like 40 mins away.

Here's what happened to my passat.... it turns out that the dash dimmer was bad.... i'm not sure what really happened but i unpluged it and using the wiring diagram i closed the circuit ... to make sure that the switch wasnt the only thing bad... low and behold once the swich was jumped out the lights came on!! so put the old switch back in and the lights worked but would only work on high no matter where the setting was. none the less i got a new dash dimmer for about 20.00. This was pretty easy once i got the wiring diagram only about an hour to fully diagnose.... included removing the lower dash pannel.
