to stroke or not to stroke

Okay, so my friend and I have decided to take on the project of making a 500hp(at the crank) 420A. I know it's going to be difficult and what not, but that's why we're doing it.:)

I just got a bare block and was about to start ordering some bottom end parts from Howell when I noticed that they offer a 2.2 stroker crank and all the other parts necissary to make a stroker engine. The difference in price between the regular crank from the dealer and the one from Howell is $300. The stroker crank is forged whereas the stock one is not. It seems like a stroker would make more power with less pressure, meaning I could get more hp out of pump gas. Am I right in my thinking? I have to replace the entire bottom end anyway. But then again would it hurt the engines rev capabilities. after all thats why bike engines can rev so high, they have short strokes. Any input would be appreciated.
I love you all.

sounds like a fun project. your correct about the stroker moving more air & also about lower piston speeds.

so what would you guys do?

For pump gas power there was no comparison between my 2.4 and my 2.0. I've posted about it in more detail in the past, if you think some of that info might be helpful try searching "strocker" or "stroker" with my username.
The short version is I got 20% more airflow at the same boost, and since boost is heat and airflow is power... :) Well worth the effort. For a .2 liter increase, not so sure, but it can't hurt. The trade off is in rev limit, but who wants to put high rpm stress on the motor if they don't have to for a street car.

My thoughts are if you are trying to build a bomb ass 420a, why not do it up right? I am definately planning on stroking my car when I get it, I want a monster :evillol:.

4 bangers are ment to have high rpms, if u stroke it, u wont have that anymore which i think is stupid. my opinion, dont stroke it. They can take high rpms considering they were built for that.

Yeah good point. Why make more power when you could make less power but rev it higher!!11one!!1
:icon16:
Airflow is power. Displacement is airflow.
And for what it's worth, I ran my stroked 4g63 to well over 8000 rpm with the rev limiter set to 8500. People are revving long rod strokers to over 9000 rpm as well. I don't see the problem, either way.

thanks for the suggestions! I am going to stroke it. It does make way more sense. I mean, I am not going to be road racing. The most I'll probably do is take it down SIR err Pacific raceways a couple times. I don't "need" the RPM's for anything and having more power on pump gas does sound extremely appealing. I'm not going to "street race", but I may not be able to resist if a Porsche or Mustang pulls up next to me at a street light. ;)
I was pretty set on stroking it before I posted the question, but.... I couldn't do it without knowing the AF guys approved. :D You never know when you might be overlooking something.
