what are the available engine sizes that would fit in a 65 convertible? and what would be the best one to use if im lookin for a decent balance between performance and show status? im not overly concerned with having a lot of power. maybe something that could be modded to keep up with my friends 79 camaro 350. but not a neccessity. lol. thanx

I believe that in 65 they didn't get any bigger than a 289. I'll find out when I get to my Chiltons though. A little mustang like that wouldn't really take much to get it moving. But if you wanted to go big there are lots of options. Such as 429's 428's 427's. Those might be a little hard to find and would take some modifications. Maybe a 302 which has many mods out there or a 351. If you really wanted to you give a 289 a little something.

I'd go with a 302, there is not much room in a 65 engine bay.

Unless you go with a Mustang II IFS :icon16: .

Like mentioned, the 289 was the biggest engine those cars came with. But a 302 is basically the same size and will fit just the same. A 351 is a task but a 302 would just drop right in. Also you can find a 302 almost anywhere. They are very common.

A mustang II Independant Front Suspension will allow you to cut out your shock towers and allow you more room. That would be an option if you wanted to go with a big block or make a 351w or 351c swap easier.

To compare cubic inch wise to your friend's 350sbc I would suggest a 302 stroked out to a 347. That takes the 302's stock 4.000" bore out to 4.030" and the stock 302 stroke from 3.000" out to 3.400". That would put you close in cubic inches. After that we would need to know more about the chevy. Or atleast how much power it is making to be able to give you any more advice to make your 347 compare to the 350. Let us know you power goals or even your budget and we will try to guide you in the right direction.
