1997 cooling system questions

Just have a couple of questions regarding the cooling system.
firstly how can you tell if the water pump needs replacing what are the symptons and secondly the hose that runs from the rad. back to the car the bottom hose on the rad. how hot should it be under normal driving condtitions say 16 or so miles no traffic or getting stuck in traffic.
