clutch problem

I have a 84 Cherokee with a 2.8L with a 5 speed manual behind it. I bought it last year and have had problems with the clutch ever since. When I first bough it the clutch plate was worn down so I decided to replace it. When I took the tranny ou I noticed that the teeth on the flywheel were pretty beat up so I replaced that too. (Shortly afterword I found out the ring gear can be turned around.) But i put the new clutch in and everything worked great. However the clutch still grabbed rather close to the floor but I didn't think anything of it. Then a few months ago the clutch just stopped working all at once. It took some time for me to find the culprit and it was the rod that sits between the slave cylinder and the clutch arm. There was a plastic cone on one end that had broken off which caused it to be 1/4" to short but I replaced that and everything was ok and it even grabbed about halfway to the floor where it should. NOW I was having to double clutch it to get it into second gear when I was slowing down. My father said to make that rod a little longer so we made it about 1/4" longer than the one I had just put in, now it doesnt work at all. Master cylinder has been replaced, slave cylinder has been replaced, I have bled the hell out of the systemand pedal feels good but the clutch will not disengage at all. HELP!

Hey,
I have a 86 cherokee with the same problem.
The first time the clutch stoped working was because the clutch fork broke. The second thing I've found was the fire wall cracked at the master cylinder right side bolt.
I would check the fire wall and see if it's pushing away from the pedal.

good luck

I thought about the clutch arm being broken and i was thinking i would need to pull the tranny. I have played with it a little but it doesn't feel broken and i am trying to make sure i check everything before i assume the worst. I did notice that the firewall does flex quite a bit when the clutch is stepped on i didn't even think about that as a possibility. I will definitely check that out. Can you give me a description of how the clutch arm broke so I know what to look for and and how u fixed the problem with the firewall? Im pretty sure it will be one of those. I appreciate the help.

Right after I checked your message I went out to the garage and checked the firewall. I had my neighbor pump the clutch while I looked at the firewall. There is about a 3" crack going vertically right through where the master cyl. bolt is that is closest to the motor. Looks like i found the problem. The only thing I can think of to fix it is to bolt or weld a metal plate to the firewall to reinforce it. Any suggestions?
