Round off the numbers already....

Okay maybe its me, but one of the little things that bugs me is why do prices always are never rounded off. Why is it that its always 99 cents, or some non-rounded number. Why can't it be exactly "00".
Case in point, the US postal service is announcing to raise the 37 cent stamp to 39 cents. Why? Why can't they round out the number to 40 cents. The same thing about gas prices, its never rounded off, its something like 2.69 9/10 a gallon, whats up with that? uugghhh it drives me nuts having to find the extra pennies.

I am sure there are other examples but those two are the very first ones that come to mind.

In Australia, our smallest denomination of currency is the 5c piece, meaning everything is rounded to the nearest .05, but then you get the same effect with 5s.

Example: $4.95 instead of $5.

Not too high that someone will still buy, but enough that they can make good money. People will look at the product and think, hey, its less than this 20 dollar bill i have right in my wallet, why the fuck not?

Yea its really stupid but it must actually work because companies keep doing it. I mean comeon! Who actually thinks that something priced $499.99 is really under $500??? I hate that shit. I also live in NY where my county has the highest sales tax in all of NY fucking 9.75% now that is just rediculous. I'm seriously moving out of here before I buy another car. Peace-

I don't think it DOES work. I mean, think about it - if EVERYONE is using the same labelling/pricing tactic, then you sell for $9.95 and your competitor sell for $9.95 instead of $10- then there is no benefit to using this system.

Actually, its 2 taxes, 8% provincial (state) tax
7% federal Goods and Services Tax a.k.a. the GST (Gouge and Screw Tax)
