Good practise= v8 truck...
In an automatic you need decent torque to spin the wheels since you dont wanna break your tranny with neutral drops.
In a manual it's quite easy to break the tires loose in anything that doesn't have real nice tires on... like an old bug can spin the tires with it's heavy flywheel- stored energy.

step on the gass really hard and push the brake a bit. the front brakes will apply before the rear ones so you can stop the front and keep the rear ones going. if you cant get the tires to spin by just stepping on the gas, hold the brake down, rev up the engine by pushing the gas, let go of the brake really fast and then push it down again.

That'll do it.
Also do yourself a favour and spray down the tread on the rear tires with a spray can of WD-40.
This will maker the tires spin more easily and create more smoke.
This being said, don't spin your tires. Smoke shows only hasten the departure of your rear end. They stress the rear axle and differential gears excessively, and will eventually result in a repair bill you may not be able to afford.
