Diorama Help

ok. I've got the Lone Star NNL this saturday. our theme is geography. I found Mustang Nevada, which means my mustang drag car is a go. I'm constructing a display. of plexiglass, a mirror and a frame. I want to make the plexiglass that is on the outside of the mustang (everything that is not directly under it) look like concrete, as in the staging lanes of a drag strip. I also plan to make a "tree" that will stand in one of the corners to look like it is staged to race...but also have the underside of the car visible. So, any help with recreating the look of concrete, feel free to contribute.

Woodland Scenics actually has a concrete looking mold material. Woodland Scenics is a popular train scenery company with great products. I've used their stuff to create a diorama for my rally Subaru and it looks very realistic in the 1:24 scale.

You need three products to create the concrete road, well two mainly, the third is kindof optional. You will need:
ST1452 - Smooth-It (1 qt.) = $4.98
ST1454 - Concrete Top Coat (4 oz.) = $4.29
ST1455 - Paving Tape = $6.49 *OPTIONAL*

While it may seem expensive, the results are stunning, very realistic and customizable, you could even use some of your old wheels and make burnout marks on it with black paint.

I was looking for more of a thinner solution. somthing that I could more or less paint on. so as to not raise the model too far off of the plexiglass

You could probably lay it down pretty thin, I don't know since I've never used it before though. Probably just build up some tape or something to the desired height then pour it.

I've always just used posterboard for concrete. In 1/24, it really doesn't need much surface texture. Cut it to shape, lay it down, paint it light grey/tan. If you airbrush it with acrylics thinned mostly with alcohol, it should create all the texture you need. Weather as appropriate with thinned black/brown paint in a brush flicked at the surface for oil drips and the like. Make it look dirtier with ground patel chalk dust- again, brown, grey and/or tan. Fix the dust down woth clear flat.

well here is where I am at. I got the plexi cut. and the poster board attached. I thought I had tan acrylic, but I didn't. so here is the process I used. I misted tamiya bronze, then I followed with tamiya titanium gold. it is a little more metallic than I wanted. but, I think the overall outcome. the tire marks were done with model master flat black. I need to do the side walls and the light tree. and create a frame for the whole thing. Let me know what you think, as well as some ideas on what to construct the frame out of. I was thinking brass tubing and rod soldered together and then painted a shiny color....maybe with a panel in the back of it. painted the same color as the car and a ford logo painted on it........:D
