I have been watching all others making this model.. so today I went out and bought this kit.. A Chevrolet C5-R..

Iīm not sure which I will make.. Iīm deciding about the yellow/white Le Mans 2000 Chevy.. OR the yellow Daytona 24 hours #3 driven by Earnhardt SR... any tips of what scheme I can do it in..?

Here are som progress pics...

the chassis is maybe going painted tomorrow considering the wheather...

http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/4853/98699sh.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

going to cut the front and back open on the body, making it a full detail..

thats all from me now.. good luck on your project out there.. =)

Best of luck with it, I had a bit of a problem with mine, and buggered the vents up, and had to bin my front hood.. I'm waiting for a replacement.

It's a great kit, well detailled and a great car. I've never seen them in action, but I'm told the C5 is a very successful race car..

The C5R was incredibly successful in the ALMS, and in the 24H of Le Mans. I have seen both the C5R and C6R in action at Lime Rock and there is nothing like that ground pounding v8 :) Pratt & Miller builds and develops the Corvette for competition in the ALMS, and Le Mans. There is an ex Pratt & Miller C5R running in the FIA GT series with the GLPK team. Pratt & Miller are now running the Corvette C6R, which was very successful in its maiden season winning the ALMS GT1 championship as well as a GT1 class win at Le Mans. Revell will have a C6R kit released next year and I can't wait! I'd love to see some LMP1 plastic kits, if only Tamiya did the 2004 Le Mans winner, an Audi R8 with a Japanese team (GOH). Perhaps Tamiya will tool the new Porsche RS Spyder :)

WAS a successful race car...it's been replaced by the C6R that continues the winning streak, and I have seen them (and the C5R) in person (though I admit liking the Prodrive 575M and DB9R competitors a bit more  ). Revell's giving us a C6R next year to play with :naughty:

Would love to see them in action. Might have to look around and see if I can find some videos or DVD's of them as I do like my motorsport.

TBH, Tamiya won't do the C5R or the C6R. Revell did a decent ish job, could be improved but I doubt Tamiya will do any US cars. They can hardly give us a BAR, and thats a honda.!!

Anyhow, thread is about the C5R, I shall watch this one, as I do like the car, and the Revell kit he has gives plenty of decal options.. Wait and see which one he selects..

There is also a great line of upgrades, SMS P/E, SMS CF and Scale Productions Decal sets.. Well upgradable model..

I was referring to Tamiya doing an LMP1 Le Mans car while we were on the subject of the ALMS and Le Mans kinda sorta. But yes, I'll keep an eye on this thread as well as mick's, as I have another C5R to build :-D

I got a problem from the first thing... the rollcage didnīt want to fit properly.. But now they do... BUT.. as I said.. what paintjob..? Yellow/white Lemans 24 hours 2000 OR the #3 Daytona 2001 yellow one.. shown in the first pic...

That's not an easy task to re-build those vents. I tried the same thing.

Keep going! Looking good....

How on earth do you lot cut these cars up.. I tried, and we all now what happened.. I've only just took the plaster off..

And your cuts look clean. When I did it, it was awful..!! Skill v no skill. you have it, I don't I guess..

Nicely done, can I post a C5R body to you for cutting up..?? He..

Mick, I could've suggested a ton of great cutting tools for removing panels. Here's the top five.

#5 - the BACK of a #11 Exacto blade: Little known modeler's secret. Scribing with the back of a #11 blade doesn't leave furrows like slicing does, and it's more effective, just very time consuming.

#4 - Dental Pick: Works as well as the back of the #11 blade, but a bit sharper and stays in panel lines better. It does remove more material, though, and furrows the panel gap.

#3 - Micro Mark panel scriber: Expensive, time consuming, but damnable effective on shallow panels. Its aircraft panel focuses design, however, makes it a little ineffective on deep panels.

#2 - Hot knife tip for a soldering iron: This is one of the most rapid ways to cut open panels. It's a tip for your soldering iron in the shape (and sharpness) of a #11 Exacto blade. The problem? It's hard to be precise with it, and when you're not precise it makes a big mess of things.

#1 - Jeweler's Saw: Basically, a really really REALLY thin bladed miniature hacksaw. It's really just about perfect for making small detailed cuts.

I only used 3 things... for the body.. one big and a small sharp knife.. and for the air-vents I used a drill to cut some small holes in it.. and then cut it out with the small knife... all of this took me about 3 hours to do.. so you have to be patient doing this... =)

First pic: The stance of the kit OOB is TERRIBLE in the front.. itīs to high.. that had to go.. Lowered it into a little bit more of a race stance...

And here is the body just resting on the chassis.. thatīs why the front looks croked... I will fix that tonight with some plastic styrene...

You work fast.. Wish your pictures were better, are they mobile phone pictures?

How did you lower this? I've got to lower mine, so was thinking how best to do this. Considering your age you aren't bad at modification work.. Better then me.. :lol2:

Keep it up, fastest C5R build I've seen..

Yep, fast is right. I've been working on mine for over a year and yours is further along!

You're right about that front ride height. It's totally out of control out of the box.

Keep going. Thanks for updates!

Lowering was pretty easy actually.. you know on the front thing the brake disc is going to be placed.. there are three holes... 2 for the brakedisc and on for the axle.. I used a little drill, made the top hole bigger and cut of the upper thing on the back of the brakedisc.. and then is was just to get the wheel on and everything was great... :D

Looks good... but you need to do some thing about those tires they look so plastic. Keep it up!

Rickard_Olsson
11-04-2005, 04:30 PM
I know.. the tires are fixed.. Good Year decals are on and a used a drill and sandpaper to fix the plastic look.. and dont know what this is called when you do this... but I will get pictures tonight.. Do you think I should wheather the car?

Rickard_Olsson
11-04-2005, 06:01 PM
Okey.. here is the deal.. I was thinking of wheathering this car later on.. what do you guys think..? I have wheatherd the wheels allready but they can look that way anyhow... but here is a pic of right back tire..

Shame you can't get better pictures. Looks better lowered, but is the rear wheel a little too far in? Or is that me looking at it wrong.

Paintjob looks nice, but I can't see too well. Bet it looks nice with the hood off. I still want to get my completed, or even started, but I'm still waiting for the resin kit to arrive.

Rickard_Olsson
11-21-2005, 03:00 PM
