Starter Motor

Hello

Last week i was forced to replace the starter motor in my 98 rodeo. The output shaft had completely snapped. My biggest gripe was my local mechanic charged me for 4 hours of labour, claiming that he had to remove the part of the tail pipe to get to the starter motor. My rodeo is a 98, 4x4, 3.2 v6 stick shift with 96,000 miles on the clock. Anybody else had starter problems, and if so, did you encounter a problem with the exhaust? Or had my mechanic taken me for a ride?????

Cheers,

Neilson

nope it is easy to remove if the exahust is out of the way. the only other way is to life the engine up a couple of inches.

96k isn't that much, but it does matter the type of climate you live in and the amount of times you restart your truck every day.

should you just change the starter and put an oem one back on, or is there a aftermarket (better/ more powerful) starter available also.

I went with NAPA's version.

Yes, the exhaust is in the way of removing the starter. There are several methods to overcome this, you're mechanic just picked the method he thought was best.

Thanks for the replies guys. As for the climate... yeah, i live in a ski town, and i'm constantly running around with way too many short trips, starting the car over 10 times a day. My fuel economy has dropped to as low as 15 mpg around town, but on a recent trip to vegas, i averaged 28 mpg, which i was extremely happy with.

NAPA's parts are factory parts that they repackage with their own boxes.

Right. Reman of a factory unit. Makes swapping it out pretty easy.
