Turbo on a 00+ celica?

How much would it cost to turbo it reliably (assume I don't know enough to build a custom setup)? How much boost can the stock block hold until you need to start upgrading internals?

gt or gts?
gt can run higher boost cause it has a lower compression ratio. gts can only run like maybe 10 tops cause of the high comp ratio. but the gts comes with 40 more hp already.

Keep in mind both engines (1ZZ & 2ZZ) are aluminum. You can't safely boost these things very high like you would an older iron-block (like the 3SGTE). So, if you've got money and you want to do this thing seriously, you could get a stage 4 racing engine from MonkeyWrenchRacing. It's a 1ZZ or 2ZZ (depending what you came with) and replace all of the stock internals with stronger parts. From there, you have a stable, strong platform to boost from.

Hass Autoworks has an MR2 Spyder with a 2zz swap that is pushing 327whp on a stock 2ZZ running 10-11psi. They say the tune is pretty conservative and they could extract even more power, but the customer was happy with that number.

god i hate how poeple say the block isnt strong enough

please sstate what exactly isnt strong engouh if his cooling system is up to par?
nothing, hes not going to crack the block or anything like that if he dosent overheat it
the block is strong enough

^ lol, ditto. i.e. new racing 3SGTEs in the JGTC are alluminum blocks if I'm not mistaken.

Sorry for bing skeptical, Vip, so you're saying a stock 2ZZ with 10~11psi of boost can be tuned to 327whp?

im sure with other mods of course.

327whp and 243ft lbs to the wheels at about 11-12psi... This on a totally stock 2ZZ with Stage-II turbo kit running the upgraded injectors, water injection, and the GT2871 Turbo.

damn... aint no 400hp 3SGTE, but still, im glad that is possible on a stock motor. I can't find their water injector for their kits, is that something they made custom just for the test? I've read about water injections for boosted systems, but I don't see them used much.

lol, Hass, bought the same base website as I did. Hopefully my server gets up and running again... soon...

Their stage 1 GT-S kit comes with the ERL Aquamist water injection system.. actually here's an email i got from jay hass a few days ago.

Aquamist 1S Water Injection System

The kit's price is $4495.00 but keep in mind that includes an ERL Aquamist 1S Water Injection system that retails for $583.00 on it's own, and the fit and finish is spot on. I can assure you, we are not sending out half assed kits that don't fit and/or have durability problems over time. We have kits around the world all running and installed with no issues...I can proudly say not one kit has had fitment problems and we've shipped hundreds of kits.

If you have any other questions about a turbo kit for your car, feel free to contact me and I'll do my best to address whatever you need.

Thank you again for contacting us, I hope to hear from you in the future.

yea water injection is the shit

SigmaProjects
11-06-2005, 06:44 PM
yea, that's what I was wondering about. John Lingenfelter (god rest his soul) had custom nitro cooling kits for some of his turbos. How long can water injection last? I mean if you drove a car for 5 hours how much water would you need?

depends on the size resevoir you have, poeple that i know have it only refill it once a day or once every other day

Vip09

They said it should last for a tank of gas.

nice... cuz im a nutt for cooling. Maybe I've been under a rock for too long, I know they've been around quite a bit, I mean I read about them when people were just using wind sheild wiper pumps to do it, but they seem like they aren't that popular yet? Also I remeber that in the begining some people used to put them in front of the turbo, which led to eventually killing the turbo and then they learned and put it after the turbo. Is it still the same way? And is there any potential for rust damage to piping?

i'd be weary of running anything more than 10-11 psi.

I don't know what crack head told you that 3SGTEs are N/A and no, the GT300 MR-S and Celica both run TURBO charged 3SGTEs and I'm pretty sure they are alluminum blocks.

I would hope they would be aluminum in a race car like that. A 3S-GTE weighs more than TWO 2ZZ-GE's combined. lol It's a heavy motor.

SigmaProjects
11-17-2005, 07:26 AM
Yea, many race car engines are Alluminum blocks for that reason. Even the big V8s have gone to alluminum. The handling benifets from weight loss.

vip, was there something wrong with ur tuning? dont seem like the results i would expect from those mods. only .28 sec and virtually no mph.

Yeah.. my tune isn't very good.. I need to get on the dyno to tune my vvt. On my other runs I was trapping 3-4mph over stock in the 1/8th but in the 1/4 I was trapping the same as stock. So my top end sucks pretty much lol.

250lbs?? Nice, hmm wonder how much a 22RE weighs...

What is water injection? does it inject water into your engine or something? or is it for pumping coolant throughout your engine more efficently?

11-19-2005, 01:07 PM
a 4agze w/ no manifolds or head weighs about 100 pounds

a 3sgte w manifolds (no turbo) and head weighs 335 pounds

a 2zzge w head and manifolds weighs about 253

and yes lotso v8's are going all aluminum, can anyone say ls1,2,6,7?
gotta love chevy for bringing back the 427 for the new vetts

yea seriously, GM has been putting on the hurt with their LS motors ever since LS1 came around, even the cast iron LT1/4 were good, but those alluminum blocks oh man Turbo LS1s are monsters in themselves LPEs turbo 427s are just insane. I just wish GM made another V6 varient off of their new LS2 like they did with the LT1, be a nice Vortec 4500, the Vortec 4300 are great too. Would have been smarter to use the Vortec 4300 (which are based off of the LT1s) then to use the 3800 series motors. I mean which would you prefer? 3800 series with 200hp/225tq or a little heavier Vortec 4300 with 200hp/250tq and a much flatter power band?

Water injection, from what I understand, it's vaporized water spayed into the intake to cool down the air.

That doesn't sound right to be putting water into an engine. But hey, if it works and it works good why not? there are a lot smarter people out there then me :)
