Carbon Removal

what is a cheap and easy way to remove carbon from pistons? i figured an "engine degreaser" and wire brush would do the trick.......

I use ATF when the carbon is built up. If they are still in the block, pour some in the bore enough to have about a 1/4" on top of the piston and let it soak for a few days. If they are out, soak them in a tub (rubbermaid).

If you go to a local parts store ask for some Mckay brand or equivalent " Parts Dip" The one quart size is the one I prefer. Dump in an old large size coffee can or anyhing along those lines and let the pistons soak for 24 hours or so.
Take them out and rinse with water and they will be bright and shiny.

BEWARE ,the parts dip is one of the nastiest smelling products that you will ever use, its aroma will linger for a LOOONG while if it is spilled. Do it away from the house and garage.
Creosote

Pick up a can of Permatex Spray Gasket Remover. Spray it on the carbon deposits and wait a short while. You can wipe off the carbon with a rag. It's the best thing I've found for removing almost anything.

"OO" Steel Wool followed up with "000" Steel Wool (Only if pistons are removed.) Wipe clean with lacquer thinner.
