2000 Cougar Check Engine Light Came On

I have a 2000 mecury cougar!! i just bought it!! No problems until this damn light came on!! it has a V6,78,000 miles. whats the problem and what is that whole fuel cell problem about cuz my gas mil. sucks!!! also sumtimes when i go to stop the cars rpm's are still going up and im at a stop so i shut it off and the rpms go back down and its fine. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!

to see what the problem is, get the code pulled at your local autozone. Theyll tell you what the code is and its meaning.

Yeah so today i went to unplug my batt so i can reset my siftting points and the check engine light went off so i was driving and smoke was coming from my hood so i pulled over and it smelled like oil so i drove to the dealer and they said to leave it and that it look like everything was dry so they will tell me for sure tomorrow what was wrong
