Cracked dash.

The little 3 inch piece of plastic that runs from the drivers side to the passenger side on the dash up close to the windshield..

Mine has 2 cracks running all the way down in it. Has anyone else had problems with this happening? I tried super glueing one just to make them sit at the same height and it looked like shit so I gave up..The cracks in general look like shit. The super glue left some white residue all over too.

I know that is kind of an odd piece to want/need but do you think a junkyard would come up off of one? It looks pretty bad and I want to replace it.

check out www.winksonline.com I know they where selling them before and yeah, they are kind of one of those hard to find/obscure items. Worse comes to worse you could always get one from a dealership but chances are they will rape you on the cost. :lol:

I'm very familiar with the problem, its actually caused at the factory with the overtightening of a screw or two and the factor of time. A lot of cavaliers get it. As was said, your best bet is the junkyard or a dealer. Alternatively, if you ever get the urge to do a nifty swap into your cavy, consider swapping in a sunfire dash setup, they don't have this problem.

Well I'm not going to try the dealership unless worse comes to worse and thats the only alternative.

I was told by another guy on another forum that the piece I'm talking about is connected to the rest of the dash minus the dash pad and bezel...This is starting to put a damper on my hopes of fixing it because I don't have all kinda of money to blow on it..It looks like crap and I want to fix it.

Anyone have any more suggestions?

Ok so far the options I have:
Replacing (Pain in ass)
Piece to cover it (can't find)
Cover with vinyl (don't know how this will look though)

Resin + Fiberglass + Body filler + Sanding + Paint + time = New looking dash. For almost nothing....

Ahh this sounds like more time than I want to put it...Wouldn't you have to take the whole dash out for this? If I'm going to take the whole dash out I might as well get the new thing...I wish someone could come up with somewhere who sells the piece that covers it..

I've been fixing cracked plastic parts for years and haven't found anything better than this stuff. Whether it's parking lens', plastic molding, almost anything made out of plastic, and it's instantaneous. The only thing it won't fix is polypropolene. The nice part about it, not that it's quick, but you won't even see the repair. I always use a "Q" tip to apply it because it's very watery. What it does is actually welds the plastic by melting it together. Unlike glue, you hold the two parts together and touch the soaked "Q" tip to the part and it's done. It's that quick!

Dang if only you had came along before I got super glue shit everywhere...Anyone know how to get all the white residue off?

Yeah, my dash is cracked too, I dont know many Cavaliers with out that crack. I just wanted to warn you about fiberglassing. Resin is bad shit and it can fuck you up. Just ask my sense of smell, or lack thereof. I made a sub encloser to fit behind the rear wheel well. My car stunk like resin for a long time. For like two weeks my friend Mike and I could barely make it 3 miles to Wal-Mart with out getting a little whacked even with the windows down. Replacing that piece would lick hairy nuts. I would try that plastic fixer and if that doesnt work, I would just live with it. Acetone (also not to be fucked with) might take the super glue off. Again, be careful. While making that sub box, I somehow got acetone in my ass crack. It blistered up and hurt like a mofo. I'd use a respirator and protective clothing for sure.

Does anyone else know something about this stuff?

hey have you tried autotrain.com they seem to have damn near everything i have needed to rebuild my body on my 2000 cavalier so they might have it for cheap

i have the same problem, one crack all the way through right in the middle. ive thought about taking it out, gluing it somehow, then just painting it red with interior paint so it'll match my car's color scheme, hwo hard is the part to take out?
