Speedo Drive Popping

Ok, so i get in my car yesterday and start driving, everythings fine (probably just drowned out by the radio). I look down at my speedo and its just popping up and down from 0-5 every few seconds. This does not give me warm and fuzzy feelings, I turn down the radio to hear the very noticeable sound (closely descrived as a baseball card in a bicycle wheel). I slow down and it becomes more distinct as a popping sound. I open the hood at home and pull the speedo cable, push the car and hear a very loud popping coming from the drive for the cable, I can see down into the hole and it appears to be turning about 1/8th of a turn and then snapping back in place with a sickeningly loud pop. My question is, do you think it is terminal and also, how do I remove this thing. I have checked my manual to no avail and also have search for hours already on the net. I know it is this drive assy. Instructions for removal would be very appreciated.

*EDIT*
I neglected to mention that the vehicle is a 91 crx with a b16 swap and a 93' YS1 teg transmission (the one with the power steering nipples on the drive)

if you mean the speedo gear in the tranny then its pretty easy to pull out. its like 3 bolts on it, and then just pull hard and it will come out. you may want to remove your battery and battery tray first and maybe a few other things if they are in the way. should be rather easy.

i dont think it should be terminal either unless the gear is chewing itself up and letting metal shavings get into the trans.

Yes that would be the gear in question. My issue is, at a glance i see one bolt that looks unrelated (it's kind of next to it, not visible enough) and what appears to be the ends of 2 bolts that are coming through from underneath the unit.

Bad cable will do the same thing.

It is not the cable, it has been disconnected for 2 days now and i definately know it is not it. It is still popping and I cant find any bolts (mainly because I cant get that far in there) to remove this thing. It has two bolts on the underside that are for disassembling it, I first need to remove it. An exploded view of a YS1 or similar, or just instructions for removing this would be extremely helpfull.

on my ls A1 tranny, there is one bolt holding it on and it is on the drivers side of the vss

There is one brass colored bolt on the DS of the VSS but it is not connected to it, it is an odd bolt because it extends out of the transmission, i removed this bolt only to realise that it didnt sttach to the drive at all, it just threaded into its own hole. Looked pretty useless really.

Upon much more searching I finally managed to find a picture of the drive removed from a Y1 transmission, with a tab extending to exactly the position of the bolt that was mentioned, Is this transmission similar? It did have the power steering nipples (I assume because the Si-R had power steering...bastards lol). I didnt really have a good enough view in my engine bay to see the tab so I may just have not been prying hard enough, because that sucker really didnt want to come out.

Also, to kill two birds with one stone. If this thing really is chewed up and I have to replace/ fix it, could I use one from a stock civic? meaning the D-Series trans? And if thats possible, if anyone has the knowledge. Do these things have different ratios to them? As in would it change my speedo reading with a D-Series unit, not that I care too much ( i have no speedo, no vtec [which just got working 4 days ago] and a clicking transmission lol).

the bolt on my vss is only like a 10 or 12mm socket size bolt. anyways i just put a sir vss with the power steering lines on them. there is alittle arm that sticks out witha hole in it and you put the bolt through that hole and bolt it to the trans. its on the drivers side of the vss.

yes you can use one from a d series because the ls vss i gave to my friend and he used it on his d series tranny. so it will fit but usually the d serie is more just like a clyinder and there a slit on it that you put sort a metal plate in the slit and then it had the hole to tighten it and hold it in place. kinda hard to explain

I think I understand, sorta like a distibutor on a SB chevy, anyway yeah i think i get it now, that was the bolt. I just need to pull ALOT harder. I had a prybar on that thing and channel locks and it didnt want to move, but I know that its loose so ill try harder, at least I know that if it is messed up it should be realetively easy to replace, although there arent many integras and no crx's there are HB's so i have hope. Thanks guys ill update tommmorow.

maybe this means you should quit wearing a speedo when you drive.

Well i finally managed to oull it out (sfter 20 minutes, 2 friends, a prybar and alot of patience. Although the gear wasnt harmed, the case was cracked just where it stems down into the tranmission. I have a master mechanic friend that said he'll have it welded by tomorrow (id buy new but im poor). It appears that the power steering portion of the drive had siezed at one point (during high rpms no doubt) because it is running with no lubrication. The side force from the drive gear stressed it enough to crack it. Let that be a heads up to those of you with this type of thing, put some lube in it or remove the ring part of the pump inside.
