2000 Durango transmission

I'm new to this forum and I hope I can get some good advice. I have a 2000 Durango with around 75k on it, in the last several months I have noticed, when cold, the transmission hangs up between 2 and 3rd gear. thr rpms increase like it's out of gear and then abruptly shifts into 3rd unless I ease off the throttle. Once it's warm everything works fine. I have also noticed, when cold, when I go to reverse to get out of the driveway, I hear a growl that seems to come from the transmission. I am looking for some things to try and possibly replace myself to or some troubleshooting tips. I am mechanically inclined but know nothing about transmissions. Any help would be appreciated.

The only tranny problem I have had with mine was when I was driving down the highway then BOOM!

All of a sudden I was slowing down and I was in 2nd gear.
After getting off the highway and getting home, everything worked fine when I restarted. It acted up again about a mile down the road.

I had it towed in and they replaced a $46 sensor and all was well.

I Am Having The Same Problem With My 99 Durango. It Has About 85k Miles On It. Whenever I Start It Up, Morning, And Out It In Reverse I Hear Some Sort Of Growl. I Thought It Was Coming From The Power Sterring Pump. It Kind Of Sounds Like The Wheels Are Being Turned To Far And You Get That Howling Noise. I Have No Clue What It Could Be.

Same problem here. All is well in forward, but reverse moans like a sick animal. Any ideas as to the cause would be appreciated.

I Think What Weatherdemon Said Kinda Makes Sense. It Stops Once The Truck Is In Drive. Also If I Run Right Down To 7-eleven. When I Back Out Of The Parking Lot I Cant Hear It Anymore. May Be The Power Steering Pump Just Warming Up.

If it were the power steering pump, You'd hear it in idle, and in forward also. This is definitely transmission related. Next time you hear it, shift out of reverse - I'm willing to bet the noise will stop.

I DIDNT EVEN THINK OF THAT. WHAT DO YOU THINK IT COULD BE? I CHANGE MY TRANS FLUID ONCE A YEAR. IT STARTED DOING IT ONCE THE TEMP WAS CONSTANTLY BELOW 4O DEGREES

Dodge has 2 TSB's regarding your problems.
For the 99 Durango's with noise in reverse,
the TSB # is 21-08-99.
The condition is caused by a resonance of the transmission regulator valve system.

For the original post, there is tsb# 21-09-00
that may apply. It involves recalibrating the TCM

I saw some answers to the "reverse" issue (mine does that too) but anything regarding the "cold" transmission? I have a '99 and when it's cold it does the same thing. It has a hard time getting from 2nd to 3rd. it's a P.I.T.A letting off the gas or gunning it until it shifts. Let me know if you've ever found a solution or cause of the problem. Thanks.

i have the same problem and so do many others it seems.. i have been told to take it to a reputable tranny guy. or some one you know.. non dealer of course. tell them the prob and tell them to adjust the bands in the tranny.. also give it a good filter and new fluid

I recently had the very same problem and had the "seal" replaced in the transmission. Now it works perfectly. I was initially told that the seal was constricting due to cold weather and this caused wear on the transmission clutch, but when the seal (only) was replaced the problem disappeared as quickly as I noticed it.
