How to remove stock intake box

so i have a freind who recently just modified his original intake system by replacing the air restrictor box *i beleive that is what its called* and replaced that whole thing with a nice pretty high performance air filter cone, it sounds and looks good and also seems much cheaper than buying an intake system for your car, i would like to do the same for my 97 cavy but i was looking at it today and i cant figure out how to remove that restrictor box w/ the air filter in it, it seems very snug in there where are the bolts? if any at all and also is my idea a good one? i mean why buy a new intake tube and fabricate your own whole for the sensor when you can recycle the stock one and just attach a filter cone?

i have to assume there is somthing wrong w/ my idea b/c i havent spotted it on the forum before
any advice would be appreciated. ty

Because that my friend is called a ghetto intake setup and most people shy away from admitting that fact let alone suggesting it to others. Me however, I could give two shits. That is what I started with.

I dont know about the 97's but with mine I just disconnected everything from the box and gave it some love untill it gave.

That is how I started in my Cavi and my Honda. Then I found the joys of E-Bay intakes. WEEE.

The ghetto intake is just more restrictive..

how is the original intake tube pipe thing any different or worse than the aftermarket shiny version lol

The stock rubber intake is ridged and shit isnt it? That causes turbulence and the air doesnt flow as good as it would with a hard intake.

yea its a bit ribbed but it doesnt seem like that would be enough to actually affect hp

it doesnt...but in truth it affects the air flow dramatically...think of it as the your parents showing up at your house when your having a house party and like 40 ppl are trying to rush out of one door...its pretty similar to that..maybe not as dramatic..but you get the picture

I just removed mine this weekend to gain some room while doing a head gasket. On my '97 2.2, it was just a matter of removing the center pin from the connector holding down the fuse box. This allowed the fuse box to be moved out of the way enough so that the airbox could come out.

Pull the back of the airbox forward so that the post clears the hole, then lift out.

Also the aftermarket ones have bigger pipes. I could fit my oem intake in my aftermarket..
