noise - coins in dryer

My truck has developed a strange noise that is similar to the sound of coins in a dryer. The noise is from under the hood and comes and goes, but is most obvious when the truck is under load, up hills, accelerated etc. I do have two possible sources but I just wanted to see if anybody has encountered this before. I have a broken manifold stud (flush with the head of course) and a plug that was cross threaded by my brother-in-law (may he rest in peace....). I'm having both of these repaired next week but the sound is really bothering me.

I would wait till you get both of those problems fixed first to see if it goes away. Although it almost sounds like the noise you describe is pinging or pre ignition. You did not say if it was the intake or the exhaust manifold that has the broken bolt, if it is the exhaust it could be blowing past there under more pressure during acceleration ect. Just a thought.....

Yeah, the broken bolt is on the exhaust side. I'm not really stressed about the noise because it probably is related to one of the problems I mentioned, I've just never heard a noise like that.

It could be a cat that has gone bad. They tend to sound like coins in a can when they go bad.

Yeah, I wouldn't be suprised if it's the converter or timing related. I make it sound like my truck is falling apart but it's not that bad. It seems to be sounding a little rougher each time I'm in it and the oil pressure is higher than normal, 60 psi at 55mph. Also the 'coins' sound got worse after the truck sat for a week. Anyway, I need to get it up on a hoist and figure this out.

I got the exhaust fixed up and it still makes the noise. A local mechanic thinks that I have a cracked flywheel. Has anybody had experience with replacing a flywheel?
