Need help with "clunking" sound.

Hi,

This noise has had me stumped for a week now! I hope somebody can help me. I have a 1979 Monte Carlo and when I drive or just coast there is a squeek(like a rusty wheel) and a "clunk" sound. These sounds get faster or slower with the vehicle speed. The "clunk" sound stops if I touch the brake, but the squeek keeps going. I can hear these noises on the passenger side only and have changed the front wheel bearings on that side. What else can it be? Why does the "clunk" stop when I touch the brake?

All responses are welcome.

Thanks

I would check all the brake rotors, drums, and brake lines. Does the steering wheel shimmy when you apply the brakes? If so, you may have a warped rotor or out of round drum if the rearend shimmys. Also, check the u-joints as these tend to pop and creak when they're wearing out. To check these, drive the car for a while(home from work) when you get home, get under the car and feel the u-joint bearing caps(front & rear). If any of them are hot, the joint will need to be replaced.
