Recently, I noticed a problem while reversing, it doesn't engaged. In several occasion, it is okay but then again, not engaging properly. What could be causing this problem? I have a 3.1L V6 TransSport.
Please let me know if it is really that serious, I'm worried about it, problem may become more if left unattended...
I appreciate those who will reply to help me solve this problem.

Regards,
White Zorro

If the fliud is full and the linkage is adjusted properly, it is an internal problem.

As suggested by "maxwedge", this is an internal problem.
Check this out:

Reverse needs 2 items: direct and low/rev clutch.
Direct is needed for 3rd gear so if you have 3rd gear, this one is OK. Low /rev clutch provides ENGINE BRAKING in 1st so if you select 1st and have no engine braking, this one is the culprit.

Well, I got 1993 Pontiac TransSport...please tell me more hints.
How about the solenoid?PCM?-before I send it for transmission repair which will be costly-it has reverse but works on a level surface only, I mean no power despite pressing down the accelerator...

Anyone who can help me further, any drawings will be more helpful.

Awaiting for more...regards,

NOTE: Thanks for those who replied

YOU seem to imply that the car moves effortlessly in forward gear. THis rules out the DIRECT CLUTCH. The second thing needed for reverse is the LOW-REV clutch . (see diagram in previous post)

Diagnostic HERE (www.avigex.ca/xport/3T40rev.jpg)

PCM is totally ruled out: if has no effect whatsoever for reverse. Same for solenoid.

LMP,

Thanks a lot...I already bought a transmission o/h kit & hope it will be repaired.
Another one I suspect is that unit box-like shape where the linkage is connected...any drawing with you please.
Do you think this can make problem?

reverse is between Park and Neutral so I would think linkage is OK (supposing park and neutral positions woek normally). I expect you are the one who is going to tell us all what was the problem...
this
www.avigex.ca/xport/revservo.jpg.
is related to the reverse servo (probably part of your overhaul kit) , an "externally" serviceable component.

LMP,

I wish I could tell...I am worried now really- don't know whether to go ahead with the trans o/h or not yet until I'm pretty sure what caused this problem.
Automatic trans is quite troublesome with problem like this,ah.
Well, I'm grateful that you're helping me somehow with your experience and resources.
Let me see now...I'm still gonna use my van but I beware slopes, otherwise, I have to push or pull it back on the road.

Any useful link will also help me out.
