95 Accord V6 D4 light comes on when car turned on

Hi all. I have a '95 Accord V6 with an automatic transmission. The car has 148X miles on it. I've noticed in the last few months that sometimes when I shift from park to reverse, or park to D4, it sounds clunky. No problems with it shifting while driving.
Today I went out to start the car, it started, but when I went to put it into gear, the shifter was locked. So I turned it off and tried it again. Same thing happened. Pulled the little manual, and it told me to look for thD4 light flashing. SO I tried starting it again, noticed that the D4 light came on, then went off (steady, not a flash), and I was able to shift into reverse.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm really hoping I don't have to get a new transmission. I'd rather add on a second bathroom...

Being able to move the shifter from park to any other gear requires the brake pedal to be pushed in. So if you are having problems, sounds like it might be a switch problem. When in park and then pressing the brake pedal, do you hear a click near the shifter? If you do, it is the release solenoid which allows the shifter to move from park.

Yep. I always have my foot on the brake when I start the car.

Would the release cause the D4 light to come on on the dash?

possibly, if someone once put it in D4, and drove, an the while they were driving the sensor went out, it just stayed in D4

or a switch

Has it stopped locking up now? If it's still locking, use the manual method of unlocking (stick a key in the slot near the shifter). If that clears the problem you have a problem with the brake switch, the wiring or the solenoid. If that DOESN'T clear it, you may well need a new shifter cable. Regarding the D4 light - sounds like a transmission problem, but I haven't encountered that exactly. Perhaps others have.

My money's on the shifter cable (not cheap, but better than a new transmission!).
