Is there a difference between an f150 and f350 transmission?

A mechanic told me the transmission is the same in a f150 and a f350, comparing the 1999 V8 5.4L engine. I bought the F350 with 130,000 miles on it to haul a fifth wheel and I said the transmission should still be good because it has the beefier transmission and he thinks they are the same. So is the transmission different in a 1999 f350 with the triton 5.4L V8 than the same but a f150?

Ive rebuilt some of both. Internally, they are the same, or have been in all the ones ive built. They take the same parts, the same clutch packs, same bushings, same overhaul kit.......ect The only difference ive found in them is the valve bodies are set up a little different, but the f350s ive done , had big blocks, or diesels in them. The gasburners should be the same. They have most of the bugs worked out of the newer ones, so you should be safe. If it starts acting funny though, have the diagnostics run on it. Electronic problems can cause failures it these trans. Good luck

there are two tranny choices for the 5.4 powered f150, the heavy duty 4r100 and light duty 4r70w. a 99 350 with a 5.4 has a 4r100.so as long as your f150 currently has a 4r100,you shouldnt have a problem.

The 4r70. is an AOD-E transmission. AS you said the 4r100, is an e4od. The 4r100 is considerably larger and longer than the 4r70. While you could interchange them, it would require different driveshaft, torque converter, wiring harness, .....ect To my knowledge, they didnt put the 4r70 in the f350, but its possible! They put c4s behind some of the early 6.9 diesels!!

That's not accurate. The 4R70W is a very significantly upgraded AODE, and uses some of the same parts, they are NOT at all the "same",especially since '98 when Ford made many very significant durability improvements.

You cannot take out a 4R70W and use a 4R100 either, the computers are not capeable of the swap (current limits etc). There are aftermarket controllers that can be forced to work, but the best solution is to get a PCM for the correct trans.

The 4R70W is rated at 700 ft-lbs Tq, while the 4R100 at 1000 ft-lbs. As you can see the absolute Tq capacity is not that different.

The BIG difference is that the 4R100 can withstand full-power upshifts into any gear from any gear (including OD) while no other US made auto can.

Well, if you want to be nit picky.lol Ijust left off the w suffix on them. Actually the 4r70 is an aod-e transmission The 4r7o-w , is also designated as the aode-w. and you are right , they made a host of modifications and improvements, but the basic trans is much the same. As you said in your post "The 4r70w is a very significantly upgradedAODE." i was merely trying to point out the difference between it and the e4od , and the fact that if both trucks had the e4od, they are the same internally. and yes you can interchange them, as i said in my post, "while you could interchange them, it would require different driveshaft, torque converter, wiring harness,....ect." The..........ect , meaning the computer changeover. I was trying to make a point, without writing a book about the swap, which you could easily do. And i agree with you, the e4od , is the toughest kid on the block, now that theyve got most of the bugs out of it. The solenoids, and electronics are the biggest problem with them now, and they can cause trans failures.
