you are one hell of a moron. Every day I'm constantly reminded of the effect smoking has on people's bodies, and the closer the person is to you, the more pissed off it makes you.
I couldn't give a shit if you think it's your "right", or your "own choice". Yeah, well it's my choice NOT to have to put up with the stink and poison of your weakness floating around in my air, but often I'm forced to. It's my right not to have to face a future of hurt and pain because a loved one is suffering from the effects of years worth sucking down pack after pack of their "right."
I don't care how good you think you are, or how attractive you think you might be, or how smart you fancy yourself -- if you're a slave to carcinogen-ridden leaves rolled up in some shitty paper you paid 4 bucks for to a company whom it cost mere cents to make, you're in a pretty sad way.
Enjoy your continued killing off of vital blood cells and tissues and organs and respiratory structures -- at least one person is getting their jollies off -- because the rest of us won't be finding much pleasure from helping you haul your oxygen tank out of the back seat, lending you money to pay mounting medical bills, and listening to you wheeze and cough as your body slowly starves to death from lack of oxygen. Meanwhile a bunch of despicable suits at R.J. Reynolds cash their paychecks made from blood money -- your blood.

Seriously, shutup. People can do whatever they want, if they choose to smoke, then let em! Its not like you telling em "Hey, thats bad" They'll just say, "So?" So it doesnt matter really, because people will always do what they want, regardless of what other people tell em..

It's not just a simple case of it's their right. If it effects other in any way, which it does (second hand smoke, etc), than it's not just a simple rights issue anymore.

second hand smoke is a load of bull. You know those billboards that say 50,000 people die each year from second hand smoke? If you believe those statistics, YOU ARE A TOOL. Wanna know what the actual number of documented deaths from second hand smoke is? THREE.

It can kinda go both ways. No, you shouldn't hafto breath it if you don't want to. No, you can't tell them to stop, you have absolutely no right. Should they stop? Probably, or atleast take other into concideration(sp).

if they want to smoke, they'll smoke. its that simple.
if your words had any effect on people, you'd think governments and laws would be more powerful...?
nope, if they law cant stop underage people smoking you think you saying that they should stop will prevent ANYONE from smoking ? no, it wont.
when i used to smoke, i never smoked indoors, nor when i or anyone near me was eating. i never blew smoke at/towards people because i knew they wouldnt want/like that.
so you really think that all people who smoke are morons ? think again.

You guys have some sad excuses for the shit, that's for sure. Same old tripe: "blah blah blah, Smoking is a right. I'll do it because I can. etc. etc." Never a damn REAL reason. Well guess what? Your poor excuses are the reason countless children spend their whole young lives living in the house with parents who smoke. You ever been hanging around your friend's house when their parent's were scraping discoloration off the walls? It built up every couple of years -- because they SMOKED. And their kids were breathing that shit in at night while they slept.
And as far as second hand smoke only resulting in three deaths a year? Please. Let's see a source on that one.
Here's mine
http://www.epa.gov/smokefree/pubs/strsfs.html
http://www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=35422
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Tobacco/ETS
Can my links be considered biased? Sure. But I'll consider the EPA, American Lung Association, and Cancer Society over opponents. Let's face it, one side stands to gain a lot more from a pro-smoking stance than the anti-smoking coalition.
So again I say -- stupidity. My grandmother lost most of her sisters to smoking (I remember many of them from when I was little, and they were always smoking cigarettes.) I never remember my sister coughing the way she does now (and she's only 21, but she's been smoking for about 5 years -- strangely enough her cough and that of my roommate sound oddly similar, and he's been smoking for 6 or 7 years.) I smell it lingering on our phone. I smell it lingering on my roommate's clothes and breath, I smell it when I hug my sister, I smell it when I venture near the breakroom at work, I have to walk through it when I'm exiting or entering just about any major public building, I smell it coming through my window at night from the floors below. I know, I know, there's few things a smoker hates more than being preached at. Well you know what? I don't give a shit. You can't stand my bitching. I can't stand your filthy habit.
Behind every person who died of emphysema, or lung cancer, or esophageal cancer, or heart disease, or pneumonia because of cigarettes, there's probably at least one person left behind that suffers because of it. And you know what? Suddenly your right to smoke butts has gone beyond your own personal world -- now it violates that of others.

The only issue any of you should be concerned about with second-hand smoke is children. Parents who smoke around their kids, the kids have no choice. If you're an adult and someone is smoking near you, you have a choice to get away from it (or get a law passed to move it from you). Live and let live (or let die).
People worry about the dumbest things when there's such bigger issues, but because the media doesn't tell you to worry about it, you don't. Media controls everything, we're all tools in one way or another.
Why not try to stop the 1 person that kills themeselves every 30 seconds each year?

With everything we know about the effects of smoking today I have to agree that anyone who still chooses to smoke is a moron. Most smokers say they wish they could quit, so it's not just nonsmokers who think smoking sucks.
Although it is a big one, second hand smoke is not the only issue here. Because smokers get sick (terminally and otherwise) more often than nonsmokers, they increase health care costs for all of us. So while it may be your right to harm yourself, you don't have the right to force the rest of us to pay higher health care costs to cover for your extra illnesses.
To any smoker who thinks they're in perfect health I say ask your life insurance company why your rates are higher than nonsmokers.

I agree with tengzero.
Smoking kills people prematurely. Smoking cuts your life span drastically.
This has been a proven medical fact for 55 years.
Smoking contributes very significantly to many, many deseases, cardiovascular problems, heart desease, and all kinds of cancer.
Personally, I have seen dozens of friends and relatives die of smking related deseases. They all regretted having started to smoke.
I do not know ANY smoker who does not want to quit. They ALL do!!
Sure quitting is tough, smokers have my sympathy.
But I still hate tobacco; I hate how I have to go through a cloud of the stuff outside buildings. I hate how, as a kid, I had to put up with smoking relatives (all dead now) and later, with smoking co-workers.
Finally, I hate how the tobacco companies and some aspects of society manipulate and con people into starting smoking, when its obvoiusly so very bad.

i do admit that smoking is discusting, and doesnt do anything good for u. the only reason i smoke is to feel normal cause im addicted. i have quit for 2 years, then my mechanic totalled my 20k rx7 tt and i lost it. ya, its not a good excuse, but something triggered a relapse if u may. ive been told that its harder to quit than heroin, but i know u just have to be strong minded and be totally set on quitting. so i dont say i want, or wish i could quit, i say i smoke, and i will quit soon. there is no trying....

Excellent point about healthcare costs, AlmostStock. Insurance is paying for the oxygen tank, the doctors/hospital costs, the mobility assistance equipment (for when it eventually gets that bad), the tracheotomy, and every other healthcare item. And then by the time they get to that point, it seems many of them don't care because the end is getting closer anyways, so they keep smoking. And my costs go up to support them.
And there are those who say I have the right to go somewhere else if I don't want to put up with their stink. Yeah? Well it's everywhere. It's outside public buildings, restaurants, and school campuses. It's jammed, still smoldering, into the ashtray outside a main entrance, so that I HAVE to walk through it. It's the guy smoking up a storm in the car in front of me, while the smell gets blown into my car through the vents (then he flicks the stub out the window, because nothing is nicer looking than a cigarette butt yellowing on the sidewalk, waiting for me to step on and get tracked into my car -- yes, it HAS happened to me.) Maybe I would like to go shoot some pool on a Saturday night? Well, that's out of the question, because every bar or pool hall (in New Hampshire, at least) has a cloud hanging around the ceiling. One of my personal favorites is the ever-present group of people who sit on the benches right outside every entrance way of my college, and puff absent-mindedly on their cigs -- last time I checked, there isn't really any other way into the building. But then, I suppose it's my right to wait out in the car or in the foyer for all of them to disperse if I don't want to have the smell hanging around in my hair and clothes for the rest of the night? Screw that.
Smoking intrudes on other's lives to a far greater degree than other's opinions on the things intrude into the smoker's life.
You don't like my bitching? It's your right to not view this thread.

Prove that 50,000 people die as a direct result of second hand smoke annually.
They don't die from it but being around second hand smoke increases your chance of lung cancer.
I don't like smoking and people who tell me to "shut up" when I ask them to please stop have their head up their fucking ass. They obviously haven't seen the end of the road that I have seen.
Both of my grandmas have had lung cancer (one dying a horrible death from it), one grandpa (was able to pull through), two uncles (one is dead the other has 6 months to live), and a couple of other friend's family. All of these people were smokers. My uncle worked construction and that added with the smoking caused a very aggresive form of lung cancer that took him very quickly.
Yes, it is people's choice to smoke or not. The thing is I do not want anybody to go through pain and suffering the last moments of their life.
My grandma, had one lung fail, she was averaging 5 breaths a minute the last two to three days she was alive, snot pretty much building up in her remaining lung along with puss that slowly sufficated her, when her good lung filled up enough she could not lean up because she couldn't breath and had to go to the bathroom on herself, morphine had to be given to her in a gas, eating and drinking anything caused her to yell in pain because the lung cancer had grown from her lungs all to her body cavity, she weighed little to nothing as she had been eaten alive, and finally she couldn't breath as the snot and puss filled her lung up enough to where she pretty much drown.
Is that the way you want to die? Not me, and I try my hardest to warn people who smoke because I wish for nobody to go through that.

I don't understand this! If you smoke for most of your life then you will mostlikely die from a smoking-related illness!! WHO DOESN'T KNOW THIS???? If you smoke at all you have a chance of shortening your lifespan. I know this, I am a smoker. Everyone that I know who is a smoker knows this! Why do I smoke? because I fucking like it! I don't enjoy smoking a pack a day but I do enjoy smoking a butt with my coffee in the morning, on my break at work, and with my beer after I get home from work. The reason I smoke a pack a day is because it is fucking addictive!! If I could only smoke those 3 ciggs then I would, but it just doesn't work that way. I would like to quit, but the problem with that is I enjoy my smokes at certain times, and if I were to quit then I can't have something that I enjoy. I will quit when I'm good and ready. So don't try and convince me to quit becuase it will kill me. I know this, especially since it says it right on the fucking pack! If i continue to smoke for the rest of my life I will sure as shit die from cancer or other smoker related illnesses, just as people who eat McDonalds for their entire lives will die from high-fat diet related illnesses, and those who drink too much will die from alcohol related illnesses. Seriously if the worst part of your day is when you walk past the smokers outside of a building, then you've got a pretty coushy life there bud. Peace-

Smoking intrudes on other's lives to a far greater degree than other's opinions on the things intrude into the smoker's life.
Yeah well, I don't have sources but I'm of the belief that you're whining is contagious and I would advise you to not be near people when you whine as not to contagion the whole of the world with pussbags.
Screw that.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not a fan of smoking...but you have no right to complain. Have you ever sped while driving? Thats hazardous to everyone else. You could end someones life. So don't come here bitching about how people smoke, when you put people in danger every day.
And don't lie. Everyone speeds at some point. Especially people who love cars enough to join a forum about them.
Or maybe...a better example. Have you ever done something because you wanted to feel 'Rebelious' or 'funny'? Well...it isn't our right to put up with crap like that. In fact, its not your right to even do it...but that right is violated isn't it?
I guess the one you're complaining about should be too.

Cigarettes are disgusting, although I do have one on occasion. One thing I have noticed b/w those who smoke weed all the time and cigarettes all the time is the aging process. Weed seems to do absolutely nothing to peoples appearance, however, if you look at cigarette smokers their skin becomes leathery and they have a lot more grey hairs.
I think it's pretty harsh saying people are stupid for smoking though. Everyone I know who smokes know the risks and consequences. I say whether you want to smoke cigarettes, weed, crack, or heroine, do whatever floats your boat. I'm really tired of the government and everyone else trying to tell people what to do. Although I think it is stupid to do harder drugs like coke, crack, heroine, but if you choose to try most of the time they know the results.
But I do agree about insurance coverage, you smoke it should cost you that much more for health and life insurance.

Yea...do all the drugs you want...so we can all have cracked out/doped up parents. Good idea. There's a goverment because people are stupid and need to be directed.
I Heart Chevy, I get what you're saying, but speeding is not "risking everyone's lives", it's not like if you go 56 mph you're suddenly a danger...if you're drunk behind the wheel thats another story.
Well neither side is gonna win this debate, it's just gonna be smokers vs non-smokers forever, what you have to understand is, both sides are profiting emmensely. The tobacco companies from selling it, and the other side from healthcare. Why would they want to stop making all that money, cuz some people that don't pay them are mad? ha.

Peace-
Okay, buddy, I hear (read) you and I can appreciate your choice.
But why ARE YOU DOING THIS??
It's irrational to precipitate your own death!
Sure, its the addiction, I know, but you were not born addicted, were you?
Are you not MAD that you were exposed to an addictive product when you were younger and more vulnerable?
Are you not pissed off that kids and teens become addicted every day?
Why does this happen, if, as you say, everyone knows its bad?
It's because of advertising and the cool or rebellious image, the social pressure and whatever the hell else the appeal of cigarettes is.
Make no mistake, the tobacco companies know exactly why peopel start smoking; they know what motivates people and they play to those motivations in advertising, product placement in movies, TV etc. and the role of social pressures.
Tobacco companies, and their tax collecting frinds in governments are playing you smokers like fish, getting you hooked, so you buy their product, often life (a shortened life) than you kick off.
BTW, if you think the government is not complicit.....cigs are still legal....and the gov't loves tobacco taxes, and they also love tax payers who die before collecting all their pension and seniors benefits.

Yea, you bring up some good points. But tobacco companies HAVE changed there ways of advertising. You never really see any advertisements aimed at kids anymore. But back in the day they have Flinstones characters advertising smoking, thats have changed.
My parents have been smoking all their lifes and I am not addicted, I don't smoke at all. If anything it makes me not want to smoke more to see how much money is wasted on cig's. Eh, whatever this is a controversial topic. Like if marijuana should be legal, people never agree or come to an understanding of the other side.

healthcare: smokers DO pay more for health insurance. Moot point. And guess where 95% of the money for a pack goes..
secondhand: enough with the bullshit. You dont bitch aobut the diesel particulates you breathe in every day, or even worse, gasoline engine micro-particulates that researchers are finding out DO exist and are much more harmful than diesel particles, and you're sucking in exhaust fumes all the time.
And finally, we all die. One way or another. Deal.
Im so sick of people bitching about smokers. IT won't be long until smoking will be banned everywhere. WEll shit, at that point i'll just get a tattoo that says "property of U.S. government" stamped on my ass.

Nonsmokers are being forced to pay for smokers health care.
Can you actually prove this or are you talking out of your ass?
The fact that smokers get ill more often has been proven over and over for so long that only a fool would try to deny it. Most people pay for their health care by being insured through their employer who also pays part of the premium. This premium is the same for both nonsmokers and smokers. Since people in the latter group are using more services, it doesn't take rocket science to figure out who's paying extra, just basic math.
If people want to smoke I have no problem with that. But if you expect the rest of us to breath your smoke and subsidize your health care costs you must be blowing smoke out of your ass.

Oh I'm well aware of that my friend. Weed would be legal if it was supplied through the government, they sell worse things over the counter. I think they should either legalize weed or ban alcohol and tobacco...one of the 2...and they've already tried to ban alcohol, ended up w/ mafia's. I have very little faith in our government, I know as soon as I say "I love my country" they'll send me overseas to die for no reason...in which case I would move to Canada/Mexico/Australia and not come back. It's all about the money here in the US, and about pretending that it isn't.

I wasn't turned on to ciggeretts by "Big Tobacco" The first time I ever smoked a ciggeratte was at the young age of 15 when I was really drunk and my friends went outside to smoke a butt, instead of staying inside i said "give me a fucking ciggerette!" smoked it and didn't touch another one till i was 16 when i started working in a kitchen where the only time you got a break was if you were smoking a butt. So instead of doing nothing but work for 12+ hours my first stop on the way to work the next day was the store for a pack of smokes. I've been smoking ever since. Kids don't understand why smoking is bad for them, so that is why they get hooked at such a young age in most instances. They see it as well so and so smokes and they aren't dead so how is it gonna hurt me? It takes 20+ years of smoking at least a pack a day to do serious damage to you, so they say well I'm not gonna smoke for 20 years!!! I need to quit, I know that, but the problem with this is that I truely enjoy smoking some of my ciggs. I've cut back, not that long ago I was going through some really stressfull shit and I was smoking 2+ packs a day. It seemed as though it was my only release. I can quit at the drop of a hat(done it before), but I don't want to not yet at least. Soon I will be because I need to get my shit together and can't afford to be droping $35+ a week on these damn cancer sticks. The health effects are something you deal with, I get bronchitious at least 3 times a year, I know what it is and how to treat it and why I have it so for these reasons i don't go to the doctor(so don't tell me that my smoking related illnesses are effecting your health insurance BECAUSE THEY'RE MOST CERTINATLY NOT!) Does it really take 20+ years? Never heard anything about that.
But I agree, cig companies don't advertise to young kids anymore. Kids could think certain things about cigs, or people who smoke cigs, but they don't get those ideas from the advertisements.

I can only hope New Hampshire goes the way that Massachusetts did (banning smoking in all public places.) Now if only they would ban it from around the front doors as well :naughty:
I do like how more and more NH towns are banning smoking in restaurants (I can't remember the last one I went in that hadn't banned it.) Of course, smoking in restaurants probalby didn't matter to most smokers, since they've lost their sense of smell or taste to some degree or another anyways. To people like myself though, there was few things that fouled an experience quicker than opening my mouth to take a bite of food, and getting a whiff of smoke in there. Talk about spoiling my meal -- but I STILL had to pay for it.
Now I just wish my sister would quit smoking :disappoin

i do not smoke, but i gotta ask,
to those who do smoke: why did you start? i mean, i know your all addicted now, but what made you first pick up a cigarette?
in an attempt to answer my question, i actually tried a cig, to see it from the smokers POV, and it tasted and smelled absolutely horrible. i also asked friends who smoke if they at first liked the taste, and ALL of them responded they hated it, a couple even described how they felt like vomiting because of it.
so, why would you start? it can't be because of taste.
the ONLY reason i see, is that you people think smoking is cool.
what would be another reason to start?
peer pressure? thats excuse only works for 1 or 2 smokes. so what would be other reasons?
tenguzero, there is nothing non-smokers like us can do. if people want to kill themselves, might as well let them. people learn the harsh way; they only get it through their heads when a family member dies because of it or when they themselves become terminal.
as for kids, you gotta spread the word any way you can. complaining/"bitching" and telling people not to smoke around their kids not only reduces their chance of getting f*cked, but also reduces the chance they themselves will begin to smoke.
this is the stress release forum and if this issue really makes you angry, then by all means, "bitch".

yes, there are other reasons, i started because i was stressed, an smoking help take the weight off, for a bit. you get a kind of headrush and you feel relexed and calm, like you're just ok. an i needed that which is why i started and kept smoking for about a year and a half, however i dont/didnt like smoking indoors, while eat etc... i would only ever smoke outside. an i was considerate, if someone near me asked me not to i'd fight the craving and wait.

I started smoking about 4 years ago, and at first it was just a smoke or 2 when I was drunk, or stressed. Now I only go through half a pack a day, but I give out a few of them.
I don't see why so many people ask why I started smoking though. Do you really care? Are you losing sleep at night because some people choose to smoke cigarettes? The last person I asked that to said that they thought I would think about why I started smoking and realise that it was a stupid idea to start and it would help me quit. I just told them that no matter how many people tell me to quit, if I am going to stop, I need to want to.
And I don't want to.

you are one hell of a moron.
Pissing and moaning about it raises your stress level, which is unhealthier for you than breathing second-hand smoke. Had your blood pressure checked lately?
In California it's illegal to smoke in any public building (except in designated areas). So what I catch a whiff of a cigarette once or twice a day? Big fucking deal. I just move somewhere where I don't have to smell it. It doesn't upset me enough to post some hate-filled rant on the internet.
PS if your insurance company charges the same premium for smokers and non-smokers alike then you need a new insurance company - don't bitch at smokers because your insurance company is ripping you off.

you probably do more lung damage sitting in rush hour traffic than you do walking past someone smoking a cigarette. as long as you're not forced to sit in a smokey room and breathe in second hand smoke all day, i say quit yer bitchin.

Wait, don't some cities of the U.S have a big cloud of pollution hovering around them?
Cigarette smoke would be the least of your worries there....

Does it really take 20+ years? Never heard anything about that.
But I agree, cig companies don't advertise to young kids anymore. Kids could think certain things about cigs, or people who smoke cigs, but they don't get those ideas from the advertisements.tobacco companies don't have to advertise to kids anymore. Hollywood and other pple kids may look up to do it for them. i.e. there was a 14yo kid interviewed by 60minuts or something like that that said she picked up smoking becuase her idol, Lindsay Lohan, lights up. I guess we can blame the Olsen twins for all the heroin addicts, Kate Moss for them feinds smokin' rocks:screwy:

I figure not many people will read very far through this post, but whatever....I challenge you to have an open mind, ignore your ADD for a minute and read the entire thing.
The health effects are something you deal with, I get bronchitious at least 3 times a year, I know what it is and how to treat it and why I have it so for these reasons i don't go to the doctor(so don't tell me that my smoking related illnesses are effecting your health insurance BECAUSE THEY'RE MOST CERTINATLY NOT!) Peace-
Thank you for making a strong anti-smoking case. I'll point out a few observations from your post about smoking(and don't take this as a personal attack, it's not):
1) $35/week. That's over $36000.00 in 20 years, assuming that you don't smoke any more than you do now, and the price stays the same. That's a good sized chunk of money.
2) Bronchitis 3x/year. You've only been smoking a few years and your health is already going downhill. I won't argue that some people smoke all their lives without a problem; but playing Russion Roulette isn't too smart.
3) Said you quit before, but now don't want to. You didn't really quit if you started again, did you? This is the classic pattern of addiction, look it up.
I agree with tenquzero, if you smoke it is moronic.
With all the information available to you today, persisting in a self destructive behavior (for whatever your reason) is very stupid. If you're a smoker reading this, look down at your keyboard and see how nasty it is - if you're allowed to smoke where the computer is.
Go to the airport, and check out the smoking room. Notice how the walls and ceiling are discolored a nasty brown color, compared to the nonsmoking areas.
Take a good look at the inside of your car windows.
Of the 6 aunts and uncles on my mother's side(that all smoked since their teens), only 2 are still alive. The rest have all died from lung cancer, complications from cancer, or heart attack. Some were fairly young, in their 50's, when they died. One had over 5 operations to remove various cancers, including parts of both lungs and part of her spine. She died, in pain, from the lung cancer. Morphine didn't help.
Thousands of people die from smoke inhalation every day/year/month. I won't quote statistics, have an open mind and look them up yourself; but the vast majority of people that die in fires succomb to the smoke, which kills them prior to them ever being burned -- and as a smoker you are inhaling smoke, on purpose, several times a day.
The "invincibility" that people in their teens and early 20's feel leads them to believe that "it will never happen to me"...the poster who said he can run a 7 minute mile even though he smokes a pack a day is a good example. I'm 43, and can run a 7 minute mile. When you're my age, you'll probably be up to 2 packs a day and will have trouble walking a mile, much less running one. My brother, who is 40, gets out of breath from walking up 10 stairs at his house. He's one of those that started smoking to be cool when he was 14. Now he smokes at least 2 packs a day; it's the first thing that he does in the morning and the last thing before he goes to sleep at night. Sometimes he gets up in the middle of the night to have a cigarette.
If you smoke, you are getting yourself addicted to a drug. You want to be a drug addict, right?
That's some of the reasons that I agree with tenquzero.
However....
I agree that people have the right to do what they want. If you want to smoke, please do so. But keep it away from kids, who can't protect themselves and are not yet equipped to understand what it is they're being exposed to. And don't throw your butts in my window as you drive by and don't blow smoke in my face to make a point.
And most certainly don't fucking complain when you are laying in a hospital bed on 100% oxygen, but still turning blue because you can't draw a breath into your lungs.
