Does someone want to tell me everything they know, whether off the top of your head or out of your ass, why every person I talk to on AF doesn't like 305 TPIs compared to....anything else.

I don't get it, what differences does .7 liters make? What's wrong with it's efi system...help me understand so I don't go and do something stupid( well worse than what i've done with the Camaro)

They lack a lot of cubes, the intake runners are very choked, they have horrible top end power, very inefficient, next to no aftermarket, etc

the only thing they are any good for is torque up to about 3k(though I may be off a bit, not 100% positive, but I know it's real low) and then it falls on it's face harder than Xeno's mom in a pie eating contest.

edit: though because of the low end torque, I imagine it is more fun to drive around town since most driving is under 2200rpms...

I don't wanna stir the waters here but i will anyway. If you had the choice and the money, would you swap something else in? If so, what would it be? roughly 5k for both engine and transmission

Well for 5g you could get your self a used ls1/t56 with pretty low miles.

you could build that 305 up if you really wanted to.stroke it into a 335 maybe go with a stealth ram intake, some edelbrock headers, a catback, cai, and maybe do some weight reduction that would help

go to the performance section and check the 305 part there's a link that has a couple of 305 that were pushing decent horsepower

it's not the 305 TPI everyone hates, it's the 305 TBI.

I think 89Iroc said one time it was a poor bore to stroke ratio...I know i read that somewhere, just don't really remember where.

its the bore and stroke combination that is so poor. I believe both the 350 and the 305 both have the same stroke. The 305 just has a smaller bore. That is a bad combination for making power. Difference in cubes is also has an effect as well. Take the 302 small block. 48 less cubesthan a 350 but can make crazy power. Thats because the 302's stroke is very short. That makes it ideal for a high reving engine. Same goes for the 327. Anything is possible of course and the 305 can crank out the power with a big cam and good heads. It just take a lot more to do it and your power will be limited if you want the motor to be streetable. Unless you bore it out....but like i said....just takes more to get it goin. But like maniac said they are great little reliable motors. Its a truck motor. Thats the best way to put it.

What cars had the 302 and the 327?

Another truck motor???? no more truck motors!!! :banghead:
P.S. I already have 2 truck engines, no more, no more GDAMNIT!!!

SO that still didn't explain why people don't like the 305's, even the NISSAN guys don't like 305's and prefer the 346cis. ..Don't ask me why, that's why i made this thread!
*Edit sorry
Oh...it's slower? ..that's all??

It doesn't have so much to do with bore/stroke ratio, there are engines that are worse - it has more to do with the valves in stock 305 cylinder heads, that you can't run large valves due to the bore size. Intake runners on stock 305 heads are very poor and not very conducive to good flow. The 305 is still an oversquare design in terms of bore/stroke ratio.

The Chevrolet 305 is the most underrated engine that Chevy ever put out. It doesn't help it that it owes its very existence to fuel economy requirements. However, there is an aftermarket for it (Torquer 305 heads by World Performance), it responds to most any modification for a small-block, and you can use most small-block equipment on it (valvetrain components, camshaft, etc).

Basically it comes down to the fact the biggest thing working against the 305 is the cylinder heads on it. The Torquer 305 heads are designed to allow use of 1.94/1.5 valves without shrouding or the risk of a valve impacting the cylinder bore/deck. The Torquer 305 heads also flow real good and have good intake runner flow characteristics. With the correct combination of equipment, the 305 can be made to be a screamer. Of course, when it comes to brute torque, there's no substitute for cubic inches.
