Hi everyone

Im sure most of the people here have had somthing go wrong on a build at least once

sometimes fixable:smokin:....

sometimes not:22yikes:....

What has been your worst model building disaster?

My worst had to be when I was working on a Taimya Celica a few year back. I was doing some finish work in the interior. I stood up to grab something and all I heard was smash. broke the front windshield into about 100 pieces. luckly. I was able to fix it with some spare clear plastic I had sitting around but it sucked when I happened.

Don't know which one is the worst, but I'm having problems with my Modena 360 to say the least. It's still in the pipeline of finishing so to say.
First of all I layed down the worst paint job I ever did and had to strip it down. So when it was ready for another go mounted on the handle I use I turned around and heard something hit the floor.
Two cracks in the roof and bent /cracked A-pillars.
At that time I gave up and put it aside for 6 months.
Finally took it out and got a new paint job on only to brake one of the side skirts in two...grmmmblll.
Got it fixed and when the time came to glue them on the paint chipped ruining it once again.
Strip tease show again.
Now it sits there with a new paint job that I'm not fully satisfied with so maybe it has to take a plunge into the bath again.
Wonder if it ever will be finished, I've been working on it on and off for 3 years now and I feel like I lost momentum.

I'm too old and have built too many models and had way too many disasters along the way to remember

So the worst one must be the most current, my custom Scaglietti hood which was repainted 8,972,435,675,987 times or so and I couldn't get it right and the plastic kept swelling and the putty kept shrinking and it's been sitting for a couple months now unfinished and leaving me completely apathetic about building anything. :crying: :banghead:

About 10 years ago there was a certain Italeri Porsche 911 Turbo that was completed and I knocked off a side mirror while sitting at my workbench. Mirror vanished. Kaput. Gone. Nowhere to be found. It didn't get lost, it vaporized into thin air. That was the only explanation after 30 minutes of frantic searching. Model was subsequently launched into a concrete block wall (one of the headlight lenses was found embedded in the wall this past winter  ). I felt much better. Of course the mirror appeared magically right after the launch :uhoh:  . And I still felt better :icon16:

I still lose parts, I still screw up paint, I still get a superglue fingerprint during final assembly, the chair still runs over an errant part, the cat still steals a tire, I still glue parts on the wrong way, yada yada...it's all part of the fun of modeling

My worst disaster happened when i was building an hasegawa corolla wrc.
I had just finished to cover the decals with the clearcoat and i was very happy since it came out really really good.
Now i had the brilliant idea to put some insulation tape (very strong) to mask the windows borders that had to be painted black.
Obviously when i decided to take away the tape it took away all the decals underneth. I stood for a moment watching the disaster and the i put the model on the floor and jump over it several times shouting very bad things.
Hahahahahahah.....this is certainly the worst...not the last.

My worst was up until a few weeks back a Nissan skyline R34. I was hoping to make a Tamiya R34 into the NISMO version. I brought the resin kit and everything, but I really messed it up.. I got the interior all done, but the cutting of the body panels for the new kit went VERY wrong, and I also broke the Resin Bonnet vents.. Lack of knowing what I was doing.

But, I think I've just gone one better.. Corvette C5-R. Again, cutting the bonnet off and opening the vents ruined the build for me, as well as giving me a new scar in my thumb.. Still not one to learn I've ordered a Resin - yes Resin body to fix this one. This one will be built, unlike the Skyline that I really lost heart with and never touched it again.

Mine was about 7 or 8 years ago when I just started to get back into the hobby. I had built a Tamiya Formula 1 car (can't even remember which exact one), and proudly displayed it on top of my wardrobe. I came home from work one day to find our cat batting something around in the living room. Didn't think much of it until later, I realized it was a wheel! My heart stopped, and I rushed to the room where the model was and there all over the floor in a bezillion pieces was my little masterpiece.

When I was putting the finishing touches on my S2000 Fastback, I superglued an antenna to the roof. As if that weren't stupid enough, I decided against it and pulled it off. If that weren't stupid enough, I tried to remove the glue residue with nail polish remover. The paint was automotive lacquer and the nail polish remover ate right through the paint. I ended up having to respray the roof and it came out ok, but it's never been the same and if I point it out, you can still see where the mistake was.

this is the WORST disaster for me in my entire time I have been in the hobby.

I was building a Lindberg 53 for victoria. cut off the roof to make it a convertable, done some real trick custom "led sled" body work, painted it saphire blue, polished it all out and rubbed through the paint into the primer "GRRRR" that was aggrivating..... BUT WAIT THERE"S MORE!!!

so I decided to switch colors to red...ended up doing the same exact thing in exactly the same spot!!! (fuming mad now) so again, repaint, ran out of red, so I went with black (not a good color for a model, great for a real custom) and I polished it out, looked perfect. got the rest of the kit ready using about 10 different kits for parts, and was preparing to put the chassis to the body....the very last step on this project.... well it was cold that day and I was wearing a long sleeve shirt, and when I reached across to get the CA to secure the chassis to the beautifuly sculpted body, I brushed the body straight off my work bench to the floor 4 feet away, then somehow I ended up at the hospital with a broken hand, and then the hardware store to get wall patching materials.

I ended up finishing the kit and drove from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Memphis, Tennessee to visit family and attend a model contes (which was the real intention for my visit in the first place) only to arrive 5 minutes late and the judges wouldn't let me enter any of my works! even after I told them where I had just driven from, and the rest of the story!!!!

I still have that kit as a testament to my persistance, and the worst thing of all of it....I only recieved one THIRD place award with it and it was in a show that only had 5 cars in the custom class.

I WIN!!

here is the finished product

I melted the roof off my firebird when I set it underneath my desk light

Then I cut the top off and made a nice convertible

I was trying to open up the hood scoops on my '03 Cobra replica...but I cut deep into the hood

It hasn't left the box since

I really haven't had a bad disaster

In between modeling spurts I had boxed up many of my completed models for a move. The sat packed away in the basement for awhile until my interest in the hobby renewed. When I finally went down to pull them out of storage, they were located under a huge pile of boxes crushed beyond repair. My Ferrari GTO, Dino, 300ZX widebody, gone! :(

I also accidentally had a 1/72 B24 Liberator crushed by a speaker years ago. It was sitting on my dresser, right below a ledge which held my loudspeaker. Being the rebellious teenager that I was, I guess I had my stereo a bit too loud.... loud enough that the 50lb speaker vibrated itself off the ledge and onto my bomber. :banghead:

I was moving some of my weights around, I forgot that I had taken the end lock off of one side. So at about waist height 20lbs of weight slide off and landed right smack on the rear of my 1/12 Lamborghini. The whole thing was crushed.

But with a lot of time, putty, sanding, paitence, and more sanding I got it back to a perfect finish.

actually just a couple days ago, rubbing some paint out on clear windows for a subaru wrc, and then crack the window breaks. Hmm maybe time for a replacement. My worst to date was when i was building a older hasegawa lancer wrc, painted and decaled up. Next thing that happens is it slips out of my hands and falls on concrete floor, chips all over it. Decals, not so replacable!

The worst for me is my S2000, 1:25 body kits don't go on 1:24 models.

The most fun "disaster" was taking a hammer to a AH-64 Apache because I was bored. That thing looked worse than a real one after it's been shot down.

My worst so far was a few years ago, I was building a 51 Henry J for a friend, I had painted/decaled and clear coated it and just finnished polishing and waxing the body
Went to the kitchen to get another coffee and when I came back it was gone??

My cat was playing with it on the front porch.
the paint on the roof was ruined, scratched right through the paint to the plastic
I managed to fix it, and now my cat stays out of my hobby room

My worst one was a Nissan 350z with SAS bodykit. First time working with Resin, it was fine but I used "Trendclad" Black paint. Forget it.. bad finish, too tick. I don't even have this model anymore (it's in the trash)

Sure it's easy today to say my old kit was disaster compared to my last stuff, but I think it was a normal progression.

Urgh..!! Same as me, Nissan Skyline, SAS resin kit.. Had little or no idea what I was doing.. I just forget about it now, and sadly I've now sonewhat gone of the car..!! Still got the Z Tune to buld, but my heart for skylines went after that, got the 350Z and was not overly happy with what Tamiya did with the chassis so stuck it back on the shelf and been building different cars instead.

It's all a learning curve, perhaps one day I'll get a Nissan 350Z or Skyline in the collection.

Mine would have to be the rear mesh grille on my F50. I didn't like the kit part (molded in clear), so I got the S27 PE set, believing it would be a good option. The PE directions simply said to cut the frame from the rest of the part (a pretty ambitious proposal, but I managed it), and glue the PE mesh to it. The frame promptly shattered into a dozen plus pieces. It took me months of fighting with it to get it together- only to find that the PE mesh part was too wide to fit the back of the car. Another several weks to resize and reshape it, so that it would finally fit. Then, after it was already mounted in the model, I discovered to my disgust that the openings for the taillights were too small. I could not believe that S27 would sell such a poorly made PE set- and that I had backed myself into a corner without discovering it, first.

I am so stupid!!

My Revell Nascar Chevy Monte Carlo had a problem. The engine cover was not very well tightened with the car body.

So, I thought...if I soften the plastic with a lighter, i could adjust the car body with the engine cover. :screwy:

Damn ridiculous idea..... it melted in one tenth of a second. I did not even had the chance to think about it! It was irreversibly damaged. :banghead:

Well...In the end it was bad. It helped me improving repair skills. Half of a tamiya putty pack plus a few inches of sand paper and it was fixed.

Conclusion: Never use a lighter to adjust plastic. A _ _ H O L E!!!!

when i was painting the black lines on my evo VI"s windsheild and used a paint that wasnt compatible with the clear plastic and the mask...the paint went through the mask and created frozen/broken glass effect...

i was able to fix it by gluing together pieces of clear plastic

My worst disaster was when I upset my wife once. She went over to where I had my nascar models (A Richard Petty Charger, Rusty's MGD Pontiac, Mark Martins Foldgers T-Bird etc. etc.) and destroyed every one of them. I couldnt do anything but sit there and watch as she grabbed each one twisting them, watching all the little piece break and fall on the floor. Then when I thougth she was done she started stomping on all of the broken pieces on the floor to make sure I couldnt fix them...

As for modelling disasters, I have a box of them from when i was a kid. Fortunately, they are proving very useful as spares! Recently, I had to rescue a distributor for a Monogram '64 GTO hardtop from the vacuum cleaner bag (not fun but I found it!) and I guess that the rest of the time, the main issue (now solved*) has been fogged up headlights :banghead:

About two months ago, I bought a new kit. Tamiya Calsonic Impul Z. It was a super nicely done kit, with a die cast underbody. I started to paint the body and I got a lot of dust on it for some odd reason. Sure it wasn't such a big deal, sanded it a little, painted it again. Runs and cracks this time... What the hell is going on??? So out of frsutration, I got some brake cleaner (I never tried using this stuff before) to strip the paint. It's a REALLY bad idea to try and strip paint when you're angry. It doesn't add up, it just doesn't... When I tried to strip the paint, the kit body just started to melt in my hands. STUPID!!! Well, I just completely threw away a $35 kit. It would have been a real good looking kit too!!!

I had spent three days getting the hood/fenders/front air dam ready for a pristine paint job. I sanded the primer down to 12,000 grit and had it perfect. So, I did my first light coat, let it dry. Then I did my first wet coat and set it on my table. I got up and tripped over an XBOX cord that was under my table. Threw the whole front end onto my carpet just 30 seconds after I finished it. Had to wait for it to dry and use a blade to remove the damage. Ended up having to repaint 3 times til it was right. That really sucked!!! :banghead:
