Replace 4 cyl with a 351

Hello,
I have a very clean, rust free '87 4 cyl/auto LX, with GT wheels.
How strong are the auto trans in these cars?
It's my daily driver, and its a little underpowered. I would like to build a mild 351 windsor/auto combo. This is for daily driving use, not a hi-po screamer, so I am looking at a near stock engine, with a mild cam, stock heads, shorty headers, dual plane manifold, 4 bbl carb (no EFI hassles). I have an 8.8 rear end to swap in, if necessary.
Will the stock 4 cyl anto trans bolt up to a 351? Will it survive in normal driving or will the torque turn it into Corn Flakes?
If it's weak, whats better, an AOD? I like the overdrive because the rear end has 3:54's in it, so I would rather not use a C4 or C6.
Also, will I need new front springs?
