s13 Black Top Vs. Red Top

Here's a thing thats been perplexing me this whole time ever since i got in2 this car. I was looking at an engine swap for a 240sx and i came across the s13. The thing i noticed was the black top s13 engine was more expensive than the red top, but yet judging by the specs that were given by the company the two engines were identical. The same was for other engine distributors. Can any1 answer why the black top cost more than the red top?

they blacktops are newer than the redtops, which means less miles. also, most the redtops had weaker internals than the blacktops. The SR ppl could tell you more but thats basically it i think

Late model redtops are the exact same as blacktops.

the blacktops have stronger internals (54C internals were what the 600whp stock bottom end dyno were on)

red top = 1991-93.5 silvia and 180sx
black top = 94 and up 180 sx
black top is newer, better port design than teh redtop and better internals.

The S13 blacktop has...

- Upgraded pistons (54C)
- Refined oil pick-up (S14 style)
- Updated oil squirters
- E5 / J4 ECU's have different programs than 62s
- Visable fins on the front timing cover (last year Redtops have this also)
- Variations in ignition wiring on J4 models
- 02 sensor is larger, and a newer Bosch style
- J4 models have S14 alternators & gearboxes

Oil pump is the same for all model year RWD DET's as is the water pump, fitment may vary as Nissan sells the oil pump with a cover.

All S13 motors have T25's w/ 0.80 A/R compressor side, 0.64 A/R exhaust side, and high port heads (superior to the S14/15's low port head)

All S13 motors do not have NVCS.

GTiR cranks and rods are different (19mm big end rod bearing diameter and larger mains).

You want silvia power? Get the s15 engine, 250hp turboed stock from factory. Anyone here have that engine in their 240sx?

Or you could not listen to the magazine racer, and get the superior S13 engine.

The S13 SR is better then the S15 SR?

its gonna be a pain for the s15
need custom drive shaft
s13 bolts right in

You also need the diff cause of the speed sensor.

Red = For Racing.

Black = For Emo.

Green = About to stomp you motherfucking face in.

Black = Death Panzer Valvecover of Doom

Green = Green with amount of money spent before motor rod knocks again

Red = Bleeding from having to take out the motor, again.

I would have no choice but to put the SR20 s13 engine whenever i do get a silvia. Its the only one i can afford when i can save up the money. Right now some guy i know is selling the shell of a 240, (everything in the car without the engine and shifter), for $580. I'm sure i can earn that easily. But all the parts for a full s13 engine swap is about $2200 alone, without shipping cost. By any chance some1 know where i can get one for a cheaper price, and i can set that as my saving goal?

Uhhh... no

You just have to use all of the S15 Driveline Tranny+Driveshaft+Diff.

lol, just something that wasn't metioned (i think) is that S15 have 6-speed gearbox which is found a bit weaker due to smaller gears, but most of the people will never notice that. Only some drifters broke it, some do use it though.
S13 Blacktop is superior to any other SR, even though they have variable timing (s15, s14) it is actually a minus in the long run.

240SXSlideStar
11-01-2005, 10:26 PM
It's a minus for people looking for really high horsepower, but it's a plus for most people.

Pavlo
11-02-2005, 05:43 PM
Thats what I ment by "in the long run", if planning on modifying your car to really high hp then VVT is a minus, for Daily driven car it is a major plus as it keeps the torque somewhat equal throughout the powerband.

Yet no one answers my question!!! But when i do have enough money i plan on gettin a s13 engine, i need more info other than hp and torque to sway my decision.

And S13 engine could mean the SR, CA or either KAE or KADE.

Lordy Lord.

Any SR that costs 2200$ is gonna be a trashcan Ebay motor. Plan to save 3000$ MINIMUM for the bare bones "look at my stock SR" swap package.

ZOMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A) Unless it comes with the Odometer intact then you dont know how many miles it has on it.

B) Milage doesnt matter much anyway. Compression hardly matters. The only good way to judge a motor is leakdown.

C) I don't really care what you buy if you want to risk some 2200$ motor and then spend 500$ getting stuff that needs to be replaced or that the motorset didnt come with then go for it. I got mine from Phase2motortrend.com and Phase2 or SRSwap.com would be the only two places I'd ever buy from.

Oh yeah, before i finally get some sleep, (damn overtime), here's the site my friend told me to get the engine from...

http://www.jspecautosports.com/catalog_product.aspx?prod_id=165

my friend says it comes with everything i need in order to perform the swap, other than the little small stuff. this is what i was savin up for at first.

TY to the person that showed me the two sites where they got their sr20 from. Ill look at it tommorrow.

Well that place at least looks like they've got their shit toghether.

I'd ask for a leakdown test, but I dont really see any reason not to buy there. I'll always stick with Phase2 or SRSwap.com personally.

I paid $1800 for mine, included everything. And got it off Ebay.

Never had a problem with it. Not one. Even put down 252whp @ 15psi.
