EGR Valve

Is the EGR Valve a dealer only part? I searched last night on www.rockauto.com and partsamerica.com for the part but couldn't find it.

Also, is the EGR valve on the late model Rodeos with the 3.5L the same as the ones on the Trooper?

I was reading info posted on the forum regarding cleaning the EGR valve, soaking the pistons and other very helpful maintenance stuff. You guys are doing a great job here for the Isuzu trucks!

Little info, I have an '01 Trooper with about 41,000 miles on it. Both my wife and I love the truck but it does use at least 1qt. of oil per 1000 miles but doesn't leak a drop. Some of the horror stories folks have posted scare me but we are going to stick with the truck despite the oil and gas consumption issues! I maintain my vehicles well so hopefully as I spend more time here I'll not only get more great info I'll have experiences of my own to share. I bought the truck for my wife but she won't let me wheel it offroad.

Usually all the EGR needs is a good cleaning (costs 3 bucks for carb cleaner and 30 minutes of your time).

As long as you keep an eye on your oil your trooper should last a long long time.

So I've procrastinated a little but got the EGR valve removed, cleaned and replaced tonight. Following the instructions in one of the links from the FAQ one set of instructions mentioned plugging the exhaust port with a hi-lighter then spraying cleaner into the other port. I have to admit I didn't quite understand these directions. I put a pen in the port, started the Trooper...it shopt the pen off somewhere, ran really rough for 20 seconds and died by the time I got back around under the hood. I decided not to pursue those instructions further and completed cleaning the EGR and installed it. The Trooper started up just fine when I tested fired it afterwords. Did I miss something with the "pen" procedures?

I realize this is an old post....But I hope to give some help and then get some.:naughty:

You're not missing anything on the pen----It's just to plug the exhaust hole.

I did this just now, and my engine shuddered and ran really rough, but never died. I sprayed cleaner thru hole and turned off engine. I disconnected the battery and then re-connected it. Now my trooper doesn't even try to start.

Anybody know what might fix this? or what i did wrong?

Guess i'll just try to jump start it......:banghead:

What do you mean by 'doesn't even try to start'? Do you mean like the battery died and it doesn't turn the engine over? Or does it turn over but not fire off and run?
Can't see any connection between what you did and the battery dying. But, if you sprayed a lot of cleaner down the tube with the engine shut off, that could be a problem. You may have a load of liquid at the injector intake causing the problem.
When I did my EGR tube cleaning, i never shut the engine down, just let it run the whole time. It would accelerate each time the cleaner was sprayed into the tube. Thats a good thing! My oil consumption seems to have gone down significantly since doing this.

I mean that it doesn't even attempt to turn over. The ignition clicks a few times, and the dash lights flash, but that's about it. And I left my engine running the entire time that I was spraying the cleaner down the tube. I turned it off about 10 seconds after I got through spraying. The engine accelerated and then backed off, and repeated as I sprayed. I didn't see the connection either. Also FYI, the headlights don't turn on. The interior lights do turn on full strength. But it does not respond at all to being jump started.
On a somewhat related note, where is the other fusebox. I found the obvious one under the hood on the passenger side of the bay. There has got to be another fuse box, right? And is there any way (never done it before) to check the relays to see if they're still good?
thanks.

sounds more like your battery is drained. Have you check your alternator?

I'd jumped start the car and see if it remains started and running. If not your battery could be bad or you're just not getting a charge and the alternator is probably bad. I'd replace the battery first though as that's cheaper than an alternator.

When I did my EGR, the Trooper ran rough and died so I sprayed some cleaner in the tube but not a lot because I didn't want to have too much fluid build up.

Did you ever get er to run?

Me? Yeah, mine started up right away after I put everything back together. I haven't had any issues with the EGR valve since I cleaned it. I will make cleaning the EGR part of my oil change routine going forward.
