Brakes making a squeaking noise

Whenever I crank my truck up and pull off, there'll be this squeaking sound that sounds like bad brakes, but the thing is, it makes the squeaking noise when I'm not putting on the brakes, and when I put on the brakes, the noise quits. Do you think I've got brake dust in there?

It's possible, and a quick check to find out.

You'll probably see the problem with the wheels off if it isn't the dust

Yep, my 93 did that. Brakes squeaked when they werent applied. Replacing pads fixed it.

It might be a glaze buildup. Sand it down should fix it as well.

If you are going to try this I would wear a good quality dust mask.

I know that they don't use asbestus any more, but I'm sure that whatever they use now isn't much healthier

GM's have wear indicators on the pads to alert when they are getting thin. If they are squeaking while regular driving they are probably shot. Best look at them soon so you won't wind up replacing rotors too. Easy enought to tell, simply see if the pads are thin and if the clips at the ends are rubbing the rotor. If not, well then check the glazing out.

Our '99 s10 was doing the same thing....there was a 'squealer' metal tab on the brake calipers that signal a break pad wearing thin. We had to have the calipers fixed ...seems they have a problem with the bolt that holds them together sort of freezing up solid and that caused the uneven wear on the pads on one side since the calipers weren't gripping evenly.
