Tune-Up Suggestions

Hey guys, its about time to get my 96 2.2 cavy tuned etc. What do u think i shud get done? Obviously im gonna do an oil change, i have a k&n filter so thats fine, what about fuel and oil filter? How often do they need to be changed. Also i was wondering if i should get a coolant and rad flush and how much it costs, it may be "a" culprit of overheating etc.

Also i was thinkin if i shud replace the brakes/brake pads? Along with some new struts maybe, because it kinda scared me about reading horror stories about struts giving out, cuz mine clunk when drivin thru the city, when u replace the struts do u need to replace just the strut body or the springs etc too? And how much does this cost and is it worth it? I wud be gettin like OEM quality ones, nothin special, but i jus want it to last me awhile and be safe, no need for racing... yet :lol2: [new car comin soon] :iceslolan Thanks

I look at overall maintainence as a chance to get rid of all that oem crap really. As much as I hate to say it but everything that comes on the cavs stock is crap so every time I need to change something out I always upgrade so I dont end up with the sames problems again down the road.

Not sure on the fuel filter, but do your oil filter everytime you change your oil. I dont think a coolant flush will do anything, unless you are low or the coolant from before isnt a good 50/50 mix. Check your pads (front) and see how they look. If they are getting low or if the wear indicators are squeeling, change the pads and get new rotors. You could get the old rotors turned, but its kinda pointless because getting them turned costs like $13 and new ones are like $15. You can check your shoes (on the back) and get new drums or turn the old ones. You should change your struts if they clunk. Stock struts/shocks are pretty cheap, I think they are like $20 per shock and you should be able to use the springs. If the car sags at all on the front or back, I would get new springs. I would do all this work yourself if you can, you will save lots. I got quoted like $250 for front pads and rotors to get changed and I did it my self for like $50. Doing the above work will save you and ass load of money. If you can do it yourself, get help from a mechanically inclined friend or bring it to a local high school's auto class. They usually will do it for the cost of parts, and they usually get discounts on the parts. Good luck.

So are the struts is whats making the clunking sound, or the springs? What needs to be replaced? It doesent sag on front or back but the clunking worries me. So just new struts or do i need the springs too? And i have a friend whos dad is a heavy duty mech. and he said he can do everything for me for free. Do i need front ones too or just the back? I can only hear it in the back but who knows. Thanks

Sounds like your struts, springs should be fine unless it sags. I wouldnt get new springs. OEM replacement shocks are cheap enough that I would get a whole set. Pretty sweet not having to take your car to a shop huh?

i got a question i got a 04 cavy and when i stop it feels like they are warped or somthing do the oems that come with the car have a common problem like that or somthing cause the guy at chevy said there was nothing wrong but ive never had a car do it before

Is the car kinda pulsing? If so, its warped rotors and the guy at the dealership doesnt know shit. Yes, Cavaliers are infamous for their shitty brakes.

well my car is still under warranty and when i bought it i brought it in to be checked for that reason and he said it was fine, will they replace it still? and its like the brakes are hitting the rotors and losing their traction just a tiny bit, maybe i should take it to midas to have them look at the rotors for free

Brakes arent covered under warranty.

I did that the other day except I was driving to a place and a friend called me and I forgot where I was going. I wasn't thinking about AD, but how pissed off I was at my friend for calling. Not his fault but blamed him.

Yeah I would get those shocks. OEM replacements are cheap as hell, I think like $15-$20 per shock but I'm not totally positive. You can get them at Napa, Champion, Auto Value (thats where I go, good prices and the people are really nice and always give me good discounts), Auto Zone, any car parts store.
