Performance Shift?

I have a 2001 Grand prix GTP and on the center display above the four mode option is "performance shift". Does this mean that my car is shifting higher or what? can i turn it off?

Not sure what year they stopped putting the performance shift button on the shifter nob, but thats where the switch normaly is.

If I remember correctly w/ perf. shift the trans shifts alittle higher in the rpm band and the line pressure is increased.

the performance shift does shift later, at higher rpms, increasing hp produced and faster acceleration.

turning it off will lower the shift points, decreasing horsepower produced, and use less gas resulting in better mileage.

i think the perfomance setting is what the engineers wanted and the non-performance setting was a marketing desicion to get a better EPA mileage rating.

That's a misconception on performance shift. It does not increase or decrease horsepower. It increases shift firmness, allows the transaxle to shift at higher rpms and improves acceleration performance.

Also tranny downshifts occur at a lower percentage of accelerator use while in performance shift.

I do agree that fuel economy is a little better with performance shift off.

OK, but does anybody know how to turn it off, because there is no button on or near the shifter, which is what i would jhave guess where it would be.

Although you may have PERF SHIFT status on your DIC, I believe performance shift was disabled or not available on 2000 - 2002 GTPs. In order to activate performance shift a button or switch is required along with a wiring mod to the PCM pin 21.
