02 GP Remote Auto Trunk Opening?

I know this might seem trivial, but I was wondering whether the 02 GP has the auto trunk opening feature, like some of the Grand Am's I have seen?

It should, GTP's are usually pretty well equipped. There should be a yellow button inside the glove box to remotely open the trunk, and if you didn't get any transmitters for the keyless entry, give me the last 8 of your vin and I can tell you if your car is factory equipped with keyless entry or not.

Yeah, it has the buttons to remotely unlock the trunk; but the trunk does not come fully open, like alot of the lower end Grand Ams I have seen. Is this normal for a Grand Prix, or do my trunk shocks(?) need to be replaced already?

Mine does the same thing. Try lubricating the hinge pivot points, but I have yet to see a Grand Prix or Monte Carlo that the trunk pops all the way up. My mom and uncle both have Monte's, and I and two of my neighbors have GP's and none of them open more than a crack.

I'll second that. Sounds normal to me. Now on my son's '02 Olds Alero GL2 the trunk pops open all the way. Enough to startle you. :lol2:

If I'm not mistaken... in my '95 GTP trunk there are 2 torsion bars, one on either side. Each are set in 1 of 3 notches, mine are in the middle and the trunk needs a nudge to get it started. I just don't know how to go about adjusting these bars, or if I should move them up a notch or down a notch.

96 and older use the torsion bar setup, 97-newer use twin lift shocks at each hinge. Be careful messing with those torsion bars. They are under EXTREME tension, and could easily sever a finger or bust your skull open if you're not cautious.

So the torsion bars are what actually open the trunk?

Yes, on the 96 and back, the torsion bars are what raise the trunk lid. On the 97-up's, it's the shocks, one at each hinge, that raise the lid (or more accurately, assist in raising the lid).

So anybody tried maybe a stronger pair of shocks yet?

Probably just a waste of money. Autozone has an aftermarket brand called Mighty-Lift, special order. The time to replace the shocks is when the trunk lid doesn't stay up and drops down. Even with new trunk support shocks, there is no counterbalance system so you may not get the desired effect of the trunk popping fully open after hitting the trunk release. The Grand Prix trunk lid with spoiler is not light like the GM "N" bodies.
If you find something that works or any type of mod for it let us know.
