MY engine will rev up way to much. I know that isnt normal and if it is...my engine gonna mess up this winter. In the mornings when im going to school my stealth will turn on to 2000 rpms or a little higher. Not only is it annoying BUT i know it isnt good for a cold engine. I have to wait a good 4 minutes BECAUSE if it doesnt warm up a little, it wont shift!! ANyways...any help is aprreciated:)

The high idle is because the car has heated oxygen sensors... it will idle the car high until it has reached operating temperatures... I'm guessing that you have an automatic... You may wanna have the transmission checked out (sry, I don't know enough a/b how ATXs work)

mine idles high as well when first cranked. its pretty normal for them to. mine is usually around 2200rpm. my transmssion acts wierd too when its cold. it can go in reverse. but once i put it in drive to take off it will just rev high an then click into gear an jump really hard.. sometimes will jump real hard. fall out of gear, an jump back into drive numerous times. i find it easier jus to take off in L.

the transmission problem described by modifier sounds like a torque lock-up converter... my friend had the problem on her atx Buick Regal... the solenoid went bad, and it kept the torque converter locked up and would keep the car in third gear (this was after it warmed up though)... and when stopping for lights and stop signs, the car would actually cut off... they'd have to wait for the vehicle to cool down, for the solenoid to work right and start the vehicle...
it may be the transmission computer also... but like I said... this is all speculation, b/c I don't know enough a/b atx transmissions to tell u
but the high idle is normal... give the car 2-5 mins... and the idle should drop to normal... then drive the car... that would be best as it would allow all the fluids to heat up... give this a try for a week or so... and let me know what happens... within that time I may have had a chance to look into the problem a little more...

yea my tranmssion problem isnt as bad as that one. its like right when i start it up an put it in drive it will go.. but if i wait a few minutes it will kinda slip an not go anywhere an click into gear. also if im getting on it at high speeds it will slip outa gear an rev near red line. ive actually had it go up to around 8500 rpms once... scared the crap outta me an there was an imediate burnings smell of course. no harm was done to the motor tho. jus the transmission got burnt pretty bad.

MIne iwll rev up to a little over 2000...only when the engine is cold. BUT wont the hard revs do a number on the valves and block? i hurd its bad for them when the engine is cool.

I wouldn't think that 2000 would, now if you were to redline it immediately after leaving the driveway... that could cause some serious problems

I'd start saving for another transmission... sounds like some of your gears are stripping or something... if you haven't, you should prolly have that transmission fluid/filter changed... if you do some reading on how to change the transmission, they sell rebuilt one's on e-bay... just a suggestion, but keep your eye on that transmission...

it didnt start doing it til i changed my fluid to atf +3.. i had mercon V previosly. mine is a rebuilt trans that is only about 1 year 3 months old. but i had a tranny flush. an still pretty much the same.. just shifts harder now.but the problem has remaind the same an hasnt got any worse within the past few months. so i donno

Well, I'm no expert... but when my mother went to get her's changed... they said you couldn't switch from Mercon to the ATF+3... b/c the Mercon is held to a higher standard or something... I'll see if I can find any info to back up this statement... but I was told don't ever switch that kinda stuff... it's just like antifreeze... you put the wrong stuff in there, it can corrode and eat away stuff... I put the wrong stuff in my Escort... it ate away at the inake manifold in certain places, due to a different chemical makeup... and eventuallly clogged the engine so much it blew... If I see a manufacturer's suggestion I usually stick with it... and if I'm gonna change, I do some investigation first...
